Cashed a bday present with this 3 hour sharpening course. Very satisfying day. Need to buy more gear now though 💸

What method did you learn for holding the knife at a consistent angle?

That many knives might worry some people....

You should see my kitchen! (And also Uncle Raggie’s (locked) drawer of death in the study for the field and camping knives).

I said some, I admire that level.

That is nice. Where did you get it?
-
• #4610
Got it from Amazon.
It was mid-priced I believe to £28, from a normal £70.
Surprised they fulfilled the order to be honest, though it took 6 weeks.I’ve not had a larger Victorinox before, it looks and feels great.
Not an EDC kind of knife though as it locks. -

I want to get my brother a kitchen knife or 2 for his birthday.
He isn't a professional, just enjoys cooking. Is there an alternative to ProCook for "decent" knife/knives for ~£50?
Current front runners are a 6.5" Nakiri and a 5" Utility knife (x50 range in ProCook)
Not sure if they are too similar and should maybe drop the utility in favour of a 3.5" paring knife?I have a Nakiri (I got for free with a set I bought) and it is my go-to knife for prep work, so keen to get him one of those.
May just get him one of those but get the fanciest one I can afford? -

If two knives:
drop the utility in favour of a 3.5" paring knife
But what you should do is:
just get him one of those but get the fanciest one I can afford

ProCook are still doing the x50 for a tenner, I'd say that's impossible to beat for the price
https://www.procook.co.uk/product/procook-nihon-x50-chef-knife-20cm-8in?I had an Eden I'd put on about the same level, maybe a nicer handle.
https://uk.knivesandtools.eu/en/pt/-eden-quality-classic-damast-chef-s-knife-20-cm.htm?As it's a present maybe go for the one with the fanciest handle for the money

Cheers, whilst typing I think I changed to the 1 knife option
Next question, "best" nakiri/ utility knife for £50?
(or please tell me the tipping point on price if I am way off) -
• #4615
Current front runners are a 6.5" Nakiri ... (x50 range in ProCook)
I have this knife. It's nice but for a one knife I'd probably prefer a chef's knife with a bit more weight. It also doesn't feel the same quality as the slightly pricier (picked up from TK Maxx) Henckel's/Wusthof/Zwilling (I can't remember which one) knife I have
I'd also say just get one and get something fancier.
Edit: It's this one I have from ProCook, a bit pricier than the standard X50 https://www.procook.co.uk/product/professional-x50-chef-nakiri-knife-165cm-65in

No way. I was hunting for that and couldn't find it.
... or maybe it's because I was trying to find the 6", which I think I'd prefer.

Will airport security take little keyring stuff like Leatherman Squirt of you?

• #4618
Yeah
"Multi tools (e.g. Leatherman and Swiss Army knife tools).
Although these may contain a knife with a blade shorter than 6
cm, many of these tools contain other implements with a sharp
point, which are prohibited. We strongly recommend that you
carry these items in hold baggage or do not carry them at all" -
• #4619
Cheers. Figured they would.

When I was a teenager I once had a skate tool taken off me because they classed it as a multi tool even though it hasn't even have any edges.

I had my pedal spanner taken off me in Athens. I also had lip balm taken off me in Poland because they reckon it was a "liquid". Switzerland owes me a 6-pack too. Those fuckers took my sealed Egyption duty-free because "outside EU". Basically, I need to get a lot more free booze tasters in duty free shops until I think we're even.

Any recommendations for a knife / set that would be used for whittling/ small object making (spoons, coat hooks etc? )
Thanks -

Marvellous thanks 👍🏼
I’d love another axe but can’t justify one!
Was treating all of their wooden handles to some linseed oil yesterday.
