@inchpincher would you be able to take a picture from the side, so we can see the profile of the crystal please?

That's pretty much the perfect watch. Doesn't look 50 years old! What did you pay for it? You must be slightly tempted to sell....https://www.phillips.com/detail/grand-seiko/CH080121/173 This is a Purple Bricks advert.

Too kind dude, no plans to part with it but never say never. Here’s a pic - you can spot an original crystal on these if it turns black/opaque in profile.
@nick_h. I paid £4k but it has damage to the edge of dial which in the eye of collectors who are paying big auction prices is significant. Conversely I paid £300 for this great Grand Quartz which also has the hardened stainless steel case and banging dial.

As always, I’m late to the party, but better late than never.
And the rain has stopped! Still dull though.

What are people's thoughts on 2xAR crystals?
AIUI a standard crystal has an anti-reflective coating on the inside. A 2xAR one also has a coating on the outside. Everyone loves the look. IMO they dramatically improve any watch. Do a Google Image search for 2xAR crystal to see for yourself.
Manufacturers don't put a coating on the outside because it's easily scratched. Apparently the scratches are easily polished out. (I don't know how.) I've never seen any discussion of 2XAR crystals anywhere except replica forums, where there's a famous guy whose username is Prof, who applies coatings himself and sells crystals for $200 or so. Is there anyone in the legit watch world who provides this service? It seems counterintuitive that only the fake watch crowd are enjoying such an appealing upgrade.

Why have they ruined such a beautiful watch with the modern 6 digit models…

In my experience, it’s great until the first scratch, then I can’t look past it. Ive seen it on a Sinn, Omega, IWC… I wouldn’t buy a watch that has double AR coating anymore.

They've ruined them all other than the OP.
