Not paid much attention to the Giro until now. Relieved to see it remains incredibly on brand by having a rest day after stage 3 and then racing up Etna 🤌🏻.

will be interesting to see who, if anyone, fails so spectacularly on Etna it destroys their entire GC race...

The league applies to all the competitions, TdF, Vuelta, and all the WT stage races too.

Wasn’t it La Flamme Rouge that was cancelled?

They weren’t covering a lot of women’s races live and when they were called out on it they doubled down and didn’t cover themselves with glory.

Nasty. Thanks

RCS planning a women's Milan-San Remo again next season. They are also talking with the organisation of the Giro Donne with a view to collaborating together on it in the future, which sounds promising.

What was their reasoning?

They are the UCI’s sprinting lanes, as detailed in the ruleset. Unfortunately I can’t take ownership.
Sprints
2.3.036 Riders shall be strictly forbidden to deviate from the lane they selected when launching into the sprint and, in so doing, endangering others. What I’ve argued for, following pundits, is a representation of the UCI’s lanes on the road itself to guide the riders.
Welsford should be fined and relegated as he deviated from his lane with his left elbow raised to obstruct, which endangered and caused a crash. Pretty obvious, but as usual, no idea what the UCI will do!
I don’t think this one is just about deviation, I think there is also a question on Welsford’s conduct in the way he caused the crash with a raised elbow. That was more than self preservation. I’m not so familiar with the conduct rules, but I’ll try to read-up ahead of the grand tours.
The bunch was crazy horny from 3k to go. Lucky to have just the one pile-up.

I know QSAV aren't everyone's cup of tea, but this is a good watch:

Yeah, commissaires relegated him. To be honest, I think it was 50/50, in that De Lie was trying to go through a gap that was closing and was being physical about it, but Welsford gave back at least as good as he was getting, so probably the right result.

a gap that was closing
It wasn’t closing of its own accord! Welsford closed the gap, or lane, by deviating to obstruct another rider and protect his win.
These situations are often commentated on with phrases that avoid pinpointing actions, which doesn’t help. Gaps closing, boxing in, touch of wheels, etc. Much better to trace the movements of riders and refer to the rules for infractions.
I agree, right result, but I can’t see it as 50/50. De Lie was doing nothing wrong. He had a right to sprint through that gap, or in that lane.

But the finish was on a curve, so Welsford was sprinting to take the shortest route. The commentators were saying before the finish that the way it was laid out meant anyone coming up on the left hand side of the road ran the risk of getting the door shut on them.
-
• #39423
Yeah, not an ideal finish but a good day for the rules being upheld. The commentators also said the UCI had repeatedly asked organisers not to place finishes near bends, so hopefully there will be some repercussions for them as well, seeing as riders are now wounded.

Maybe this shouldn't be in the Pro thread :)
