Total shit show. But I wonder if the 50/50 liability issue was due to him technically riding an illegal bike. BC requires that "a cycle operated on a highway must be equipped with a brake that will enable the person operating that cycle to make the braked wheels skid on dry, level, and clean pavement.” That is, a front brake only on on a fixed wheel bike is not legal. From the picture, it's hard to tell. I can see a front caliper on the mangled fork stumps, but cannot see any levers on the bars which makes me think it's a single level mounted close to the stem. Single chaniring could also be a giveaway that it's fixed. Or worse, single speed and still only one brake.

To clarify, I think the judgement is ludicrous, but that might go some way to explaining it.

A reminder, if it were needed, to join British Cycling for their third party liability insurance. Not that it would have helped someone in Canada.
