  • I made nightstands this weekend, 'inspired' by these but marginally cheaper. I ordered the plastic cut to size so they only had to be glued together, I used acrifix (10/10 for gluing acrylics) and cheap AliExpress right angle clamps to keep everything in place. Would have been easier with nicer clamps but they did the job and were barely a tenner.

I'm a bit miffed about the bubbling in the green / purple connection but I won't lose much sleep over it.

  • Nice. What's the coaster?

  • Made by Space Available, I dread to think what they might have cost but they were a gift.

  • Would anyone mind sharing a bit about thier design/thought process?

My 'work' tends to be mostly mostly textile, leather work and wood work. So I like to draw (scrawl) things out in front of me and have lots of pics and ideas/inspiration saved. I use an A3+ Rhodia dot pad to sketch things out, drawer to scale and make patterns with. Where i get frustrated is that I like to have pictures and things as reference so find myself basically scrapbooking on top. Obviously that's not very 2022...

I've been considering making the whole process Digital with an ipad, apple pencil.

Does anyone one else do it that way? I've been playing around with the concepts app, and that seems like a cool way to do it. Infinite canvas type things suit my scatter brain approach.

  • I made a few chopping boards and added them to my spoons for sale thread.
I’m really enjoying these little woodwork projects.

  • Last few days of enforced layoff with a bad back, might as well make a stick. Olive handle jigsawed out, lump of Holly has been seasoning for a year.

  • I use my surface sometimes, but find it very weird compared to my usual process of starting off in pencil, rubbing it out a million times until I'm happy then inking over the final lines. It just doesn't feel right and you can't see where you've previously fucked up.....

  • Holly cleaned up, after all, nobody likes a grubby Holly. Olive handle roughly shaped

  • Starting to look real sharp

  • Could anyone fabricate me some metal spikes with a cantilevered bar to support a planter at near enough 160cm?
    Is that even sensible?

  • Should be easy enough. Heavy gauge reinforcing steel 18 or 24mm, cut at 45 degrees angle. Shorter piece as a support between the X and Y axis of the 'gallows'. Get your local garage to weld it together, £20 should cover materials and labour. I would do it, but I'm not going to Putney for just that!

  • ....and glued, now to shape the handle to the stick, followed by 100 grades of sandpaper.

  • Stick finished (middle) using an American gunstock oil from Ebay for the first time. I was so impressed that I refinished my own stick (bottom). Also started a crook for Mrs B, for that authentic Little Miss Moffett look....

  • Yesterday's work cancelled, rain stopped play, so I messed around with sticks. Two cut out, one roughly shaped and Mrs Bs crook smoothed ready for finishing. Nowt more from me on the stick making front until July at the earliest, by which time the sticks I cut from my friend's woodland before Xmas will have seasoned. Unfortunately, this is the last of my lovely plank of olive, if anyone has a plank of figured hardwood about 30mm thick lying around, let me know!

  • Anyone have a good source of hardwood?

It will be for turning, so I could buy bowl blanks off of Ebay, but I dont need them to be particularly thick - only say 30-40mm, with a diameter of around 15omm, so I think it could be cheaper if I buy some long planks (planed or unplaned) and cut them up into squares and then turn those.

    Any ideas?

  • This is precisely the rabbit hole I have just been down, unfinished waney edged planks are definitely the way to go (I was looking at 30 to 40mm for stick handles). Planed and sanded planks with finished edges are apparently made of solid gold. EBay is your friend as ever, search by timber species. If you're looking at kiln dried timber, which is cheaper than that which has been seasoned over time, check the pictures VERY carefully for cracks.

  • Hardwood Offcuts in Essex is a great resource for reasonably priced quality wood in small quantities.

  • G&S Timber

  • And @moocher

Surrey timbers is by far the best hardwood dealer (especially for hobbyists) I've found near London. I wouldn't recommend buying timber online as I know too many experienced guys who've been ripped off. The guys at Surrey timbers are as friendly as you'll ever get at a hardwood dealer and they know their stuff, a huge range and also sell packs for wood turning and other crafts.
