• Oil changes are mostly just to displace moisture and the hub comes loaded from the factory with about 1.5x as much oil as is needed to keep things running smoothly so I'm not surprised.

  • They are pretty bullet proof rohloffs.

  • The sweet spot for mine isn't where the coloured dots line up...

Kinda sounds like something might be up with it?

I've had a few Nexuses and Alfines and they've all lined up properly. Have you definitely got the correct cassette joint for the hub?

  • It's possible but it came on a new bike so should have all been set up correctly. It's been good after a bike shop set it up but it does drift out of alignment after a while. I've never tried another though so don't know what it should be like.

  • Any I’ve had have been pretty fit and forget…until you take wheel out. Usually need an adjustment to get the dots lining up after removal/refitting and then maybe another adjustment a couple rides later, like when you take it all apart it doesn’t go back together quite right so you adjust, then it ‘settles in’ probably cable ferrules seating properly etc, and you adjust back to probably where it was before.

  • I picked up my eBullitt a couple of weeks ago and it has nexus 5 with gates belt drive. This is the first bike I've ever had that has an internal hub, Di2 shifting or e-assist so I have no idea what normal is. It's been great but occasionaly it does seem to feel like it's either slipping or the gear is engaging late. I don't really know how to describe it but it makes a clunk sound when it happens.

I've got a free service for the bike in the first 6 weeks but wondered if anyone knew what I should expect, wondering if the torque from the mid drive affects things or if I'm shifting at the wrong times?

  • Mine goes about a year between adjustments, including removing the wheel to fix punctures etc. It never seems to need any adjustment.

  • You need to back off the pedalling a bit when you change gear; it won't like shifting under load.

  • Ah, nice one. Changes were buttery smooth like that.

  • won a rohloff on ebay last night about 8.30pm, have had three messages from the seller since asking me to pay. Get the sense he's eager to have the money in his account.

  • I'm looking at getting a gebla rohbox for this rohloff I've won, (allows you to use Sram or Campy Brifters to shift it, rather than the rohloff gripshifter) has anyone used one or modified shifters to work with it?
He's got a lovely step by step manual (http://www.gebla.de/Rohbox/Rohbox-All-Inclusive.html#7.)to modify the shifters which looks like it's simple enough (if fiddly) to do, but wanted to know if anyone has done it.

  • Not done it personally, but Shand use that set up all the time

    https://www.instagram.com/shandcycles/

  • thanks, just pinged them an email, their website needs a bit of a rewrite as the gebla rohbox section just repeats and extends on the co-motion grip shift section above it.

  • I can't wrap my hear around the gearing limits for speedhubs. Does anyone have access to a chart that makes it clearer? For example, am I allowed to use a 36 x 15 gearing?

  • Did Shand get back to you btw?

  • No they didn’t.
Had a word with my lbs, and came to the conclusion it’ll be cheaper, if slightly uglier and less of a faff, to get the co-motion shifter and some TRP hylex brakes.
Rohbox and shifters is cleaner looking but more personal effort to hack the shifters and set up, and the extra cost doesn't seem to make sense if I’m doing the majority of the work to get it set up..

  • I think the co-motion shifter looks quite nice

  • I also don't mind the stock shifter either though. I was considering moving to drops but now I've fully embraced big wide MTB bars

    The manual is here (it's a 64MB PDF): https://www.rohloff.de/fileadmin/user_upload/manual_En_2017_11_update_2.pdf

Page 19 says you can. So does this (older) note: https://www.rohloff.de/en/company/news/news/speedhub-500-14-revised-permitted-transmission-factor-now-21

Does anyone have access to a chart that makes it clearer?

    Does this help? https://www.rohloff.de/en/service/handbook/speedhub/tables
Otherwise try page 20 in the big PDF.

  • That's massively helpful, thank you!
Looks like 36/15 is just within the 2.1 limit

  • what bike is this?

  • Salsa Fargo with a snazzy hammertone paint job

  • My build will be pretty similar to what you’ve got except for the wide bars. Can’t give up the hoods and drops..

  • Do you have a Fargo too? I kind of wish I had drops but I'm too lazy/scared to fuck around with hydraulic brakes.

  • No getting a frame built up, as a super commuter type of thing, based off the geometry of my old soma smoothie going full audax wannabe, front rack for randonneur bag, close fitting mudguards, rear rack mounts, clearance for upto 45s, Dynamo front hub and lights..
So I can get to work in any weather. Whether or not I’ll ever actually need to commute to work in future is up for grabs.
