Was citing a law that says UK citizens can't fight in a war in which the UK is not at war with one of the parties, they seem to be arguing it isn't relevant as Russia and Ukraine haven't declared war...

David Davis was on LBC citing the same Law earlier

i'd be interested to know what they thought made it unlawful as I can't think of any law that would prevent it generally...

Don't know the UK laws but a friend in Austria who joined the foreign legion in the 90s lost his citizenship.

I find that strange - i wonder when someone was last prosecuted under that law, or even whether it would survive a test against ECHR

Just flicking through the various new channels on Freeview to try and find some up-to date information to find GB 'News' presenters and pundits joking happily about an apparent Hollywood film of the Ukrainian Soldiers on Snake Island who told the Russian Warship to go f@*k itself and whether they survived or not. I know GB news is a pile of steaming rightwing bullshit but to have absolutely no sense of decency or the seriousness of the situation, let alone the terror of it for real Ukrainian citizens absolutely beggars belief. Utterly appalled by them

Good point. There may be more recent legislation re. Syria etc but it may be more terrorism related. Saying that, is Putin carrying out a terrorist act? Using violence to achieve political ends - maybe.

On Reddit there are sound recordings with Russian and Ukranian soliders cursing each other over radio. Which has taught me that 'you used condom' is an insult in Ukranian. Awesome.

People going to fight in the Spanish Civil War were warned of the risk of prosecution, but no prosecutions were actually brought. Presumably on the basis that the prospect of getting a jury to convict someone of fighting fascists was extremely remote and therefore it wasn't worth the effort. I suspect the same would apply here, but it's still technically illegal for a UK citizen to go to fight in Ukraine.

Not sure. Probably not such an issue in the 19th century when the law was passed.

To my mind, that demeans Ukraine's resistance thus far.
This is a war where the sides are not equal, but the actions of the Ukrainian troops and people are more than so.

The problem with designing a peace deal is the same problem that has surrounded this conflict from the start, and it goes back to the narrative war. Putin has described the stakes for Russia in fantastical terms that have little relationship to the actual situation. He wants to de-Nazify a country with a Jewish president and Prime Minister and protect the people of the Donbas from a ‘genocide’ that was a complete fabrication. So Zelensky can promise without difficulty not to be a Nazi and not to conduct a genocide. What he cannot do is to deny Ukraine’s right to exist as an independent state following its own path. Putin’s people claim that is not in doubt. The problem, they claim, is that the wrong people are in charge. If so presumably they would have no difficulty with free elections under international supervision.
