Suspect that being part of the EU made things better in the UK. Some things got stricter, sensibly.
I'm learning I am very out of the loop on pricing.

Outside chance my 325i will be sold this weekend. Sure we had a difficult start together, but since it’s ecu debacle it’s done nearly 2 years /20k miles of utterly dependable driving, so I’ll be sad to see it go, but with the Irish motor tax system and increasing fuel costs it’s been getting annoyingly expensive to run, so we’re changing both of our cars for a new family load hauling appliance.
Currently top of the list is a phev rav4. Why? It’s big, reliable, cheap to tax, and will do 70k kms on a full charge before switching to petrol, so there’s a good chance we’ll rarely put petrol in it for daily duties, and only for bigger trips.
We live on the west coast of Ireland which has a very limited network for charging a full ev, so they’re off the list.
Is there anything else worth considering? Not interested in anything with a Diesel engine.

A self charging hybrid?

I don't know much about phev tech - will rarely using the ICE side of the car have a detrimental effect on the engine? Re: oils and other fluids

Gassed Up on BBC Three. I've watched three minutes. WABOC
No, I think I'm 60 years too old. -

You were right first time!

Thanks for taking that bullet.

The tech tells you when stuff needs doing, while others bits are do with time not mileage.
Do wonder what servicing EV needs, as mentioned before.
-
• #70185
Yeah, do wonder about that. Isn’t the engine there to charge the battery rather than drive the wheels, so can be optimised for infrequent use?

Looking at that it can be fixed, but the labour would be high. Intrigued what happed to the door

• #70188
I reckon a tree fell on it

That was quite funny, thank you. Need a laugh.
What I meant was, intrigued why (how) the rear door has twisted to come to rest like that.

I realised the dumpert link was actually to the exact same video, and not a sales advert like I assumed.

Just realised too.

Currently edging towards what I said I wasn’t going to edge towards - a 996 C2…
Just can’t seem to really find what I’m looking for at the price I’m prepared to pay (some admission regarding affordability in there somewhere).
My BIL has a McLaren 12C which has proved to be an utter ballache to own so he’s looking to move it on. It obviously has the annual £5k McLaren warranty (it needed the Aircon system replaced last year which would’ve cost around £15k all in), so now in an apparent act of complete insanity, he’s sniffing around Maserati’s…
I told him what I’d previously told him - just buy a Porsche Turbo…
Anyway, back to the 996 - other than the mythical IMS bearing, what does one look out for @Dammit

Evidence of maintenance, really- and of the stuff that counts, so coffin arms, top mounts, rads, condensers and so on, rather than just “oil and filter and ignore the odd noises”.
996.2 get it bore scoped, 996.1 I’d not bother.
If it’s had the exhaust manifolds off that’s good because those bolts can be a grand to remove if they’re in bad condition- and they’re all in bad condition.

Also contemplating a cooking 996 or a boxster s , but probably not till the summer after I have sorted the garage out.
996 prices seem to vary wildly. What do I need to budget for a basic manual coupe? Not fussed if it's c2 or c4 and cosmetic condition is far less of a concern than mechanical.

Nah just lights. Only for bike rack. And yes will be homolgnated for ITV (mot), stricter here than UK where anything goes.
