I've been thinking about that a fair bit. I knew about the raids but assumed they were mostly a PR exercise and people would get away with a fine, if that. It was shocking to find out that there are already people serving long sentences. It's particularly upsetting because there's zero sympathy for them in the rep forums. I was told to shut up about it. The only issue under discussion is 'dammit, my choice of fakes has narrowed'. Guilt-free consumption, yay.
Then I read a 2015 report claiming that 20% of consumer goods made in China are counterfeit https://www.wongfleming.com/wp-content/uploads/COUNTERFEITING-IN-CHINA.html and a number of stories about Jack Ma calling for prison sentences for counterfeiters. Looks like he got his wish. But people still want to work in fake watch factories and dealerships, so presumably it's not the worst job. Or perhaps for some people it's the only job available. So they would prefer that we keep buying. I'm in two minds. There's a Patek 5726 fake I'd rather like. But I might stick to gens from here on.
People are in prison. So funny. Ha ha. It's a victimless crime and you'd only get a fine for it in most countries. It's a tragedy for the all the people involved and their families.
