• Just had an almighty battle with my Wahoo so posting this just in case anyone else has this issue in the future. I was out riding the other day and when I tried to turn on my Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt it came up with a message saying it was ''installing'' something followed by ''error install failed''. It then switched itself off. At the time I laughed it off, thinking that it would struggle to install anything when out and about and not connected to stable WiFi. I didn't even know where my device was that I usually pair it with when using the companion app. I tried again a few days later at home and got the same. I did some Googling and nothing really seemed to suggest a solution. I got repeated advice to make sure the Wahoo was connected to my WiFi by using the companion app to check but I couldn't get past the installing/error install failed thing and the Wahoo just kept turning itself off. My phone couldn't find the Wahoo. Other advice also suggested that I might be having an issue because there wasn't enough free storage space on the Wahoo, so I should go into the companion app and select the ''manage maps'' option to create some space. Christ. In the end I had to download Android File Transfer to my computer, plug my Wahoo in, and delete a file called ''system_update_elemnt''. This stopped the device going into the installing process and I could then check the storage, check the WiFi connection, pair it with my phone, make some space by managing some maps, and do all the updates (there were several, and several reboots, the whole thing took ages).

Serves me right for not updating the thing for about two years.

  • But wahoos don't update automatically as far as I know... Did you start an update and went outside without waiting for it to finish? Anyway the experience sounds horrible.
