the "loft" is more like a crawlspace above a loft conversion and the hole in the tiles is about 6 foot from the hatch and I doubt anything up there is capable of holding my weight. I pushed the box into place with a telescoping mop handle. it will probably remain there after we move if it fills with any amount of water as I have no idea how to retrieve it at that point.

A large piece of tarp and no nails might help temporarily .
