  • We are hopefully coming out to Obergurgl this weekend (fingers crossed for son's PCR on Friday). How is the village? Is it quieter? Are the restrictions very noticeable?

Its about as busy as it gets right now but thats not saying much. No queues, pistes mostly clear. I struggle to think of a better resort to take a young family.

Rent from Scheiber Sports...they store your skis and boots at the bottom of the lifts for you, provide a changing area and dry your boots overnight...for free. No hobbling around in boots. The others don't do that.

Piste snow is in good shape from top to bottom.

Apres ski bars are closed but restaurants are open. FFP2 masks are mandatory in huts, lifts and in communal areas in apartments/hotels. Other than that, I haven't noticed any restrictions.

If you're looking for a very good instructor for your kids, I can highly recommend Maaike Wijts at the ski school. Super experienced and confidence building for new/nervous skiers.

  • In other news, we might be moving to Obergurgl this summer. Planning a bit of a mid life crisis.

  • I can think of worse places for a mlc…

  • If it weren't for Brexit or family (wife/daughter) I'd move to a mountain resort of some kind at the drop of a hat. My French/Spanish/German is crap but it would soon pick up (my Italian is almost non-existent). My job is completely remote, Mrs GB's not so much.

(I'm in absolute prime MLC territory too.)

  • Any recommendations on some gloves / mitts for snowboarding? Took some seal skins on my recent trip and wasn't up to the job. Looking to spend about £40/50.
Huge choice on the internet I know but if anyone has any recommendations..... Cheers
Oh and the doctors said Iv got a small tear in one of my left knee ligaments. Gave me some cream to rub on the area and a physiotherapy number to call 👍🏻

  • Something from Hestra. Don’t skimp.

I’d be tempted to try these as well: https://singular-society.com/

  • Leather gloves are great. For snowboarding (there is a specific snowboard thread where their might be a more knowledgeable audience) I would recommend to look for something with some kind of reinforcement on the fingers, or at least minimal stiching. From my friends who board, all their gloves fail there first from dragging their hands on toe edge turns.

  • Nice one guys. Not heard of either of them brands and some food for thought too. Will look into them and hopefully find something I'm after. Thanks

  • I'm a big Hestra fan for super cold weather gloves but have to admit than Kinco make fantastic gloves for the money. In fact, just bought another pair after this thread reminded me of them.

Kind of wish I hadn't spunked £100 on some Reusche last week.

  • Snowboarder here and Hestras are great, I have some of their 3 fingers. Almost too warm for the mild european winters we are getting though!

  • I like Leki gloves. But I don't really have a choice as my bats are Leki ones with the funky clip-in function, so Leki gloves it is.

  • The Patrol mits? They are awesome. I have an extra Hestra merino liner to go in them too.

  • Mine are the Helis with a super fluffy (technical term) liner. My hands suffer from the cold and I often switch out the liners for a set of thin Rohans. I should treat myself to some Hestra merinos

    100% this

  • Brilliant, was just interested in how the restrictions were working (looks like they’re due to ease a bit more next week).
We’re been visiting in summer and winter since 2000. If you’re moving out the Ötztaler Rad Marathon is a great ride from Sölden.

Ha, teaching grandma to suck eggs. Sorry about that. I bet the valley has changed a lot since 2000!

Do you know a chalet called Hochegg? We'll be there all summer...i'll buy you a beer if you're in town!

@hippy has some history on Passo Rombo/Timmelsjoch

  • Wtf is happening to Mikaela Shiffrin?!? 3 dnfs in a row. So unfortunate, her confidence must be shot to pieces

  • Switzerland has now eased all restrictions except for wearing masks on public transport. I guess that will masks still in telecabins, but no covid passes are needed to move around or eat out now.

  • This company recommended by a mate doing a season for equipment rental.
    snowbrainer

  • Does anyone know if its possible to recycle old ski boots, and if so how?

  • I asked when I had my boot fitting and they said landfill.

(Doesn't mean that someone doesn't recycle them though...)

  • Yes I saw this but not available here afaik. It just seems incredible that the only option is to tip them
