  • I've now got three different answers for the 50k min. speed so good to see no one else can make any sense of this stuff either! haha

10kph would mean I could get clever and stick some gravel rides in to see if I could get 1.5 or 2pts per 50k. I see the current leaders in the AAA thing are doing 1.5AAA 50k rides.

  • Yep I've noticed that before. I reckon a good number of Kent club runs I do would carry 1-2 AAA points if I could be bothered registering them as DIYs. But who can be arsed with that...

  • I'm only scrounging for points because I want 100AAA points thing.

  • Ah I forgot there was one after the triple award... Ok I might have to chip away at that.

  • Triple award?

  • Didn't realise the hundred is for one season though.

Yeah the best way would be to knock out loads of little ones. If I rode a 10AAA 600 I'd likely not even look at my bike for a couple of weeks and fall behind.

  • Yeah, the guy at the top seems to bust out a bunch of regular 200s. The guy in 2nd is doing lots of 50s and 100s.

  • just catching up myself - any ones you recommend - looking for short 100km for now - I'm just in Oldbury, Birmingham so easy drive down the M5

  • Hi - have only done a couple of 200km that Mark Rigby organises, always start and finish in Tewkesbury.

Did this 100km in sept last year - think it was The Teddy Bear's Picnic -

There are quite a few perms around the Worcester and Malvern area too that I have yet to really research but are on the database on the audax uk website.

Tbh - currently looking through the Lost Lanes Wales and Borders book and seeing if any of those routes could be turned into a 100k DIY as I tried a 200k last weekend and had to bail due to bad knee/fitness/awful weather/foul mood after crap breakfast at first control in Bromsgrove. Lost Lanes Midlands is going to be out later this year too I think.

  • Anyone on here done an Easter Arrow? I looked into it a few years ago but it didn't happen for one reason or another. This year could be possible. Any advice?

  • Think I'll dip a toe in the audax lark this year, maybe start with this 100k out in Essex in a couple of weeks if anyone wants to join?

(Late to this) but you can have a fourth answer.

There is no minimum average speed for a BP, it's whatever you agree with the DIY organiser.

    Reg 4.1 (here: https://audax.uk/media/2255/regs_bp_2020.pdf) says:

    "
    A minimum of 10 - 12.5 km/h and maximum of 20 - 25 km/h is normal practice.
    "

But those figures are just "normal practice", they are not an absolute minimum/maximum.

Hummer's End to End - Brevet Populaire is a good example: https://audax.uk/event-details?eventId=694

    "
    Distance: 1300 km (1300 km) in 156h00
    ...
    Speed: 3-30 km/h
    "

Although the timing suggested requires 8.333kph, but that's still less than 10kph.

For a more definitive answer I'd speak to your DIY org as they will have a good idea of what they are willing to accept. BP really is "anything goes" so I can't see why not.

  • I see. It's basically an org call for BPs. Spanks

  • Rode the Newport 200 yesterday. A classic, no-frills winter event through Cheshire, Shropshire and a bit of Staffordshire. Tea and coffee at the start, soup and cheese butties at the end.

Sapping headwind on the way out, redeemed slightly by crisp blue skies. Had hoped for a little more of a tailwind on the way back. Didn't quite make it back to the hall before the rain came in. Fully soaked in the last 10km and then on the ride home after. All in all a good day out and a few more miles in the legs.

  • Well done for getting round that, taking into account yesterday's light winds!

  • Snuck in a mid-week DIY yesterday. Figured I'd make the most of the westerly that's been around for a few days and set my sights for Cleethorpes for a bag of chips by the sea.

After a functional, but uninspiring escape from Manchester it was onto the Trans Pennine Trail to take me over the hills and out to Doncaster. It was nice to be mostly car-free on this stretch but long sections of SFAB, endless tree roots-under-tarmac and repeatedly slowing to pass walkers+dogs or navigate anti-motorbike gates did feel like I was making it hard for myself.

After short stint on the road and a quick bottle top-up in Thorne I was away from the traffic again heading down the Isle of Axholme Greenway. The combination of sun and tailwind had finally dried my shoes out after failing to dodge a few too many puddles earlier on in the day.

More road followed, punctuated by a brief bridleway section to cross Horkstow Bridge (one of many old bridges on the ride too!). After the bridge, a small climb was followed by a delightful run along Middlegate Lane, a smooth, sun-soaked, single track road along the top of Saxby hill.

From there it was a bit of a slog along the A12 then onto NCN routes 1 and 110 all the way to the sea. The route took me into the wind for a few sections and I encountered my 4th hedge trimmer of the day. Thankfully escaping with innertubes intact! A healthy portion of chips and mushy peas on the pier was a must before catching the train home. What else is there to do at a seaside town when you arrive out-of-season, with the tide out and after dark?!

Definitely something to do again, but maybe in the summer when the trails are dry and with some more comfortable tyres!

  • I enjoyed your write up! Entertaining.

Hi viz chat: I am torn between the Decathalon hi viz gilet and the Raceviz Wowow Stelvio or Dark Jacket 1.1. I'm pretty happy with my layering during rides so was trying to avoid encasing myself in non-breathable screaming yellow. This is going to be for night riding only I think. Any fit / breathability insight is appreciated.

  • Use hi viz straps or sash?

  • Thanks!

I've used the straps hippy suggested, great visibility and not clammy but they are quite chunky for what they are and I found them a faff to pack when not in use.

Now using one of these: https://www.leisurelakesbikes.com/clothing/gilets/craft-high-visibility-gilet-hi-viz-yellow__315200

Was the best combination of much reflect and very mesh, while still having a solid front. Or at least it was a year or two back when I bought it. Fit isn't amazing but it does usually need to go on over a few layers.

  • I've got a thinner set than those ones. Audax Oz ones, called Monkey something maybe that Doug gave me.

  • Those look better. I got some of the elastic ankle straps from audax oz and they're pretty good!

  • Good right up and pics, particularly bike on bridge.
