((Value of product+cost of shipping and handling)*duty rate)*VAT rate=total cost, is my understanding.

Yes:
Most goods arriving in the UK are liable to any or all of the
following taxes:Customs Duty
Excise Duty
Import or supply VATWorking out what customs and/or excise duty might be payable is basically impossible for ordinary people. Eg for the coat example what and how was it made? Perhaps start at https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/sections/11
I think a women's coat made of man made fibres and weighing more than 1kg will have VAT at 20% and import duty at 12% if coming from the US. -

Just get very riled that the price jumps massively from the advertised one as soon as you go to buy. Also, the last thing I ordered took 8 weeks to arrive. Though that was from Russia. A bit over it.

That was the case before Brexit though. I've spent more than the cost of Tim Tams releasing my Tim Tams from UK Border Prison scum.
-
• #31381
Recently? The threshold for paying VAT and duty used to be much lower but is now £135 (for not gifts) which I assume is several Tim Tams?
-
• #31382
Nah, a while back, when the threshold was lower (I wish she sent £135 worth of tim tams).
Does the 135 include postage cost?
-

Does the 135 include postage cost?
Yes.
If it is a gift the threshold for VAT is £39 (inc postage).

Paying tax on gifts. Get fucked, governments.
It costs like $100 to send a few packets of biscuits from Oz. That's why I told folks not to bother.
-
• #31385
Tx!
Yeah it really confused him and me too. He pinged HMRC perhaps they got back to him, not sure.

It's definitely annoying since the VAT removal stuff. I haven't had any delivery delays yet but I'm filtering more for UK buys now too...

If you don't tax gifts then it allows lots of loopholes. A diamond engagement ring in the UK would have a big VAT bill. Should people with the time and money to do it be able to fly to somewhere without tax on diamond rings and buy it there and then import it without paying tax?

That's apparently the 2-4 day courier rate with Australia Post. You could send a pack of Tim Tams via Economy Air, taking about a month, for 'only' $23.
Or Amazon will deliver a pack on Monday for 7 quid. Apparently they are $3 usually? Penguins are close enough for me.

There's a wee shop under Burger and Lobster at West India Quay that sells Tim Tams, amongst other Southern Hemisphere goodies.
Edit - if it's survived pandemic.

Penguins are shite.

Would you believe I found an Aussie shop by accident while riding the An Turas Mor route in Scotland? https://cannichstores.co.uk/product-category/australian
-
• #31391
Didn't we spend that on PPE contracts that didn't meet spec though?
-

There's a shop in Rotherhithe that sells Tim Tams.

We've started insisting upon a receipt from Correo, then photographing the labelling, and the receipt, and writing to Correo for an explanation of the charges, and asking for a refund. Some people have had success with this ( if you believe the facebook groups).
And congrats on the little one!
-
• #31395
Yeah, how many millions wasted on dodgy gov contracts? How many buses worth of slogans will that take to get back? Fuck Brexit. Fuck the Tories.
-
• #31396
Pretty much. I'd rather ride to Scotland again. :)
-
• #31397
Checked with my acquittance hmrc refunded him £12.
But the total fees were 35% of the coats value in the end.
-
• #31398
my acquittance
Sorry to hear that you've parted company. :)

Woops!😂

Really, which one? I live in Rotherhithe and haven't seen this speciality emporium.
Is that not 20% VAT + whatever the import tax rate is on the product group and that's calculated from the value + shipping and the extra handling fee.
