  • Utfs but couldn’t find anything, so: how does relative effort work?

Today I rode 100k with a friend who I would consider almost identical in terms of fitness. We both used a HRM, rode the same type of bike and neither of us used a power meter.
We are neck and neck for distance this year, and we both cycled the same amount of distance last year. We are also the same age. (The point I’m trying to make is we are very similar.)

His relative effort score for today’s ride was 216, while mine was 80.

I though relative effort is supposed to be comparable so what’s going on here?

  • It's based on time in heart rate zones (or manually entered 'perceived exertion'). Either your relative heart rates during the ride, or your Strava profiles' relative definitions of heart rate zones may differ.
