  • Maybe remind him how the Shropshire by-election went.

  • Apparently this is “encouraging crimes against Jews” according to the Telegraph.

A decade ago this would be recognised as completely insane, now it’s just mainstream news output.

  • My last constituency in the UK has Raab as the MP. Still pissed off with Labour for putting up a candidate which split the vote enough to ensure more Raab.

  • . Still pissed off with Labour for putting up a candidate which split the vote

The inability of our left and left of centre parties to co ordinate has undoubtedly led to more Tory governments, and greater hardship for more vulnerable people. On the continent coalition is the norm.

  • On the continent coalition is the norm.

Isn’t that mostly because the elections on the continent aren’t fptp? (And the greater plurality of the party political system, which fptp actively discourages)

  • The problem is the electoral system, which discourages coordination. The LibDems had a once in a lifetime opportunity to change it and got fobbed off with a referendum rather than forcing a change.

  • No one needs more Raab.

Any excuse to repost this gem

  • It's difficult it's it?

Antisemitism has been steadily increasing, so anything that can be used to spread hate can also encourage violence. But at what point does that prevent any discussion?

What is frustrating is that from the bits I've seen, criticism of the report seems to amount to "I don't like the word apartheid". There doesn't seem to be any engagement with why it isn't.

Prima face (unless I'm missing something obvious) I don't see how the situation in the occupied territories are anything accept apartheid. In Israel Palestinians have the right to vote and have representatives, so their situation isn't directly analogous to SA. But, as i understand it, AA is saying that it meets the ICC definition

The 'crime of apartheid' means inhumane acts of a character similar to those referred to in paragraph 1, committed in the context of an institutionalised regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime.

Again it doesn't seem like the most outlandish claim.

It would be interesting to see which other countries AA has made similar claims about.

(worth saying I haven't read the report)

  • They were probably pissed when they wrote it.

  • Seems radical as I’m not the one who is the problem (disclaimer: other views are available)

  • I could but he’s as bullet proof as they come, didn’t even get binned when he ‘inadvertently’ (word de jour) mid-claimed tens of thousands in expenses.

Seriously, they’d vote for a turnip with a blue rosette here

  • On the contrary it'd be better to flood Tory constituencies with non-Torys so they can vote them out.

  • Be interesting to see how the more rural Tory voters act when we get to the end of the CAP-alike taper (by which time I imagine that farmers currently just about breaking even will have packed it in).

Whilst it’s true that there’s no new money for levelling up, and indeed funding for the regions is now at 40% or what it was when we were in the EU people believe that levelling up means transfer of wealth from South to North, which to be fair it would do, if it were actually real.

Close down the rural economy in the Southern boroughs that vote solidly Tory whilst sending their taxes to the North and see how long the vote holds up.

Possibly of course for ever, but a man can hope.

  • Moving round the county in 2016, farmers fields were full of large Vote Leave signs, saw a single, lonely Remain one.

For local farmers, the chickens are going to come home to roost (or, more literally, they won’t).

  • I think it’s only difficult if you believe that the Telegraph (and whoever they may be quoting) is speaking in good faith and not just being breathtakingly cynical.

  • The thing that angers and upsets me most about this is Israel's knee-jerk response which is to dismiss any criticism as anti-semitism. It's a school kid level response, and by inextricably linking Israeli politics to Jewishness (is that the right word?) I'm pretty sure it encourages some people to harden their anti-semitic views.

I haven't read the report either. And I doubt anyone in the Israeli government will read it, let alone act on it.

  • Nice for investment firms, grab some cheap ex farming land.

While rewilding policies (important! But they do cost money and consumers buy based on price) combined with letting in lower standard Australia food aren't exactly going to help farmers either.

In NI farmers near the border usually voted remain, those further away leave. Orange Vs Green Labour Vs Tory same shit, different label?

  • It’s not a knee jerk response. It’s a deliberate policy to conflate anti semitism and anti Zionism.

  • You seem to think people see beyond the Daily Mail headlines like "Corbyn is a terrorist"

Can't imagine why stories about Piri Patel wanting to replace Cressida Dick would be leaking now.

  • I'm hearing the EHRC is bad now wth

  • Well it's both knee-jerk and deliberate.

  • Right- but culture war stuff fades away when it’s your job in the farm shop which just got canned because the farmland has been turned into an inheritance tax dodge/rewilding project and fox-hunting area.

  • Dave the farm hand has never heard of a "culture war", all he knows is the country is going to pot and the papers say these Labour guys are terrorists and communists who want to give free internet to the millions on benefits while he's just lost his job.

  • One thing that is for damn sure is that the Amnesty report will not make one iota of difference on the ground. Israel are essentially untouchable and the findings of Amnesty will fade and float off into the ether.

Crying anti-semitism every time someone criticises Israeli crimes is slimy as fuck but by golly it works a treat.
