  • Gaah. That's really poor service, IMO.

But you came out of it okay, I suppose!

  • Yep, I understood probably more than most about different displays/artwork etc. But they've changed the artwork between my order and delivery and called it the same thing. I've written to them last night but realistically won't be able to get replacements in time (if they even accept their fuck up) so will just end up being highly resentful until we move.

  • Are all wc flexi pipes the same? We've a had a furry invader nibble a hole in the pipe behind the wall of our downstairs wc, must have got in up through the neighbour's cellar - old building & our waste pipe exits through their side of the cellar space.

How to go about replacing this - is there a specific sealant for the joints? Excuse the "vintage" decor behind the bog wall...

  • If there is anything wrong with a wren kitchen (which is a lot of the time) their business model seems to be; throw replacement parts at the customer until we get the right one or they give up and go away. A client of mine a couple of years back was able to install a near complete kitchen in their granny annex, from memory they had to buy one drawer front, one door front and worktop. These days it's even easier because you can just tick a box on their app (a photo of the issue isn't even required) to order replacements and they arrive the next day. Their margins must be fucking ridiculous if they can solve problems by spunking money up the wall like that.

  • Is that a bit of timber propping up the Flexi pipe?

  • Why yes, yes it is

I messaged a guy we'd used before to come & sort it properly but he's patched me - the space to work in is about 3' square and requires climbing down behind the concealed cistern so it's not the most attractive of propositions

  • A mere blip in the whole process, they sent a muppet to install and ended up pulling the carcasses off the walls and refitting. the boss man fitter came and took one look, tutted and rejigged everything in a day to mm precision (muppet was given the elbow).
thing is i knew it was going to be a shit experience but it took 3 weeks in the end! the kitchen is great though and the memory of having my living room full of boxes and dust has faded.

next kitchen is going to be different and probably ikea/howdens with custom fronts, will get trades in and do some myself.
plan is to remove the old kitchen, tile floor myself, build units myself, get fitted professionally (cousin who’s a fitter but i have to bribe him to travel) get plumber, electrician (another mate) worktop fitters in and then hang all he fronts and drawers myself.

    what could possibly go wrong?.....

  • Quite a lot of things...

But if you have the trades on site, doing the work, it's nothing they haven't seen and solved before. Can recommend Howdens, btw, and also a worktop supplier/fitter depending on what you're after.

  • Their margins (for domestic/retail users) is hilariously huge yes. For bigger contractors/new build guys they get it at some low prices, but mostly it is low end stuff, they do have better quality stuff, but folk rarely choose it, as Wren price it (retail facing) at pretty offensive prices IME.

  • Anyone any preference on brand/ varient with insulated plasterboard? Got a vapour barrier up so doesn't need one in it, though most inherently have that rating as the foil back PIR gives that (no?) anyways.
Old C19th thick stone building, 24" of stone, air gap then modern framing on external walls, lathe on internals (they are fine as is TBH), just the external and party wall I want to insulate well. No point going for mad 100mm <0.01w/m crazy stuff as rest of building is like a sieve (becoming less of a sieve room by room though). Around 30-55mm of insulation pir stuff likely going to make a noticable difference over the 1980's damp saturated thin plasterboard that was on there.

  • Kitchen will be the last thing to do and a while away yet. glazing/heating/bathroom will be the priority.
Just want it to be more efficient on pricing for next one, Wren was part financed 0% and involved very little sorting on my part plus the design for a tricky space was spot on.
seeing what’s involved helps inform for the next one.

  • Nope, as that's for lifting doors up. I'm looking for something that will support a shelf inside a cabinet, and then bring it out and down to a lower level.

I basically want just the mechanism from this, without the wire baskets so I can make my own shelves that fit the space.

    https://www.hafele.co.uk/en/product/pull-down-basket-shelves-two-tier-chrome-wire-gas-spring-operated-for-cabinet-width-500-or-600-mm/0000004d000165a300040023/

Edit: Sorry, didn't see your edit! Thank you

  • If it were me I'd want to replace that with a proper waste pipe in the knowledge that it's much less likely to be eaten.

You could offer the plumber extra to do the job but to be honest it's not that hard and if you give it a go I doubt you'll fuck it up as much as what is there already.

EDIT Just remember to have the fall going the right way

  • I've edited again now! I'll have a look for just the mech.

  • Maybe email them info@hafele.co.uk

I can't find the mech on it's own at the moment. I can think of reasons why it would only come with the wire baskets.

  • Thanks for looking anyway. Will reach out to them.

  • I was wondering about replacing the flexi pipe rubbish with a "proper" pipe - I assume that's been flung in there as someone couldn't be arsed doing it properly at some point... will have a look at the lenghts & angles and try and work out what i need, cheers

  • Looking at the picture you posted I cannot see that being put there by a plumber or bathroom fitter even if they did turn up with a labourer by the name of Tonto.

In my experience pros do sometimes use flexi but not for what appears to be a straight run with a 90 degree elbow.

  • Anyone else continually confusing @Bobbo with @bobble?

bobble just bought a flat and asking the sort of questions I'd ask
    Bobbo answering all the questions

    Carry on

  • I need to read this thread more. Starting to mess about with stuff in my flat

Currently going to strip off all the old wallpaper and lining paper. Bikes going up. Going to see about fitting this fireplace for show (maybe add one of those chimney balloons as it draws air currently).

    Kitchen /bathroom still way off

  • Your flat has a embrah new town vibe.

    Like the CRM inspired fireplace.

Stripping the wallpaper is painful and you may not find what you want behind it.

  • yes! made a similar comment somewhere the other day :)
