  • What Phildas said. I could have told you that you silly noob

  • Been there, done that. Not for me.

  • Nice! How did you black out the PDW mudgaurd stays, sharpie?

  • They do em in black now

  • What @dbr said. Couple of quid extra, but figured fuck it!

  • Resprayed and rebuilt my venerable Condor Fratello winter road bike. Pretty happy, went for metallic silver/blue fade with sapphire glitter clear coat.

Built it up with Chorus 12, chunky 30mm winter tyres, PDW guards, rim brakes and obligatory safety pizza. Having used a disk AXS bike for the past 6 months, I’d forgotten how good nice mechanical feels. Tactile and smooth.

  • How many miles do you think you'll be able to get out of a 12 speed chain over winter? I ask because my 11 speed 105 might give me about 1400 miles
(per chain) based on last winter's riding.

  • I’ll have to see, but Campagnolo chains are known for their durability. I can testify that my Campag 11s chains lasted two winters use per chain.

  • Readers wife -

Raleigh banana, shimano 105 and hi-vis bar tape.

  • Is this a 531 frameset? It looks the kind of steed built to last for many winters.

  • This has seen 12 winters

  • That's a mighty fine winter road bike

  • Unfortunately it's the old gas pipe tubing model

  • Nice.
12 (UK?) winters in the same paint?

  • thanks all - yes, its done very well. Winter training duties back when I was more seriously cycling, and now just more commuting and general duties, but its been heavily used, usually in shitty weather, and hardly shows it.

The shifters are record 10s which I got off ebay and only in the last couple of months I needed finally to rebuild the right side. Bars have changed a couple of times (to match the fashion of the times), and its gone through 3 or 4 sets of rims - all laced to the same dt240 hubs that I've never touched beyond greasing the rachet freewheel thing. It shares the rotor crank & powermeter with the tarmac thats just in the background - couple of minutes to swap over.

Paint is as it came from Roberts. Its a bit chippy, but the metallic black hides dirt and scratches, and big knocks are very easy to touch up. I keep toying with the idea of a giving it a respray - cant decide what I'd want though so never go through with it. Likely one day I'll update from 10 speed and at that time send it in for something funky!

  • Campy chains tested worse then SRAM and Shimano for 12 speed durability. Apparently a drop from their 11 speed supremacy.

    IIRC overall 12>11>10 but 8>9

I’d hazard that care and shifting skills are what will lead to the longest life of a 11/12 speed chain.

  • mates bike

  • 10 (Scottish) winters in now. Still on the original headset, never replaced because the upper race of the lower bearing is seized in the frame. Any tips for removal? Have tried heat/bashing etc.

  • Also easily on 10+ sets of mudguards over the year lol. Current Flingers are highly recommended, BBB BFD-40s absolutely not.
