  • You will die my son, just probably not quite yet.

  • in building some wheels just now i've definitely got a little bit of grease on the otherwise clean tub rims

i don't have acetone in the house or isopropyl alcohol. what's my next best option for a wipedown?

  • Wipe off the worst of it, then clean with undiluted washing up liquid, then rinse thoroughly and allow to try. Neat washing up liquid is pretty good at shifting grease. It works on my hands anyway.

  • Cheers x

  • Edited -Now only need one plz

Anyone got a spare set of road tubulars they don't need? 700c black 22mm would be ideal. Would need to collect tonight or tomorrow night

  • What is the current favourite quick repair sealant please?
I've looked and found Vittoria pit stop, Stans and a Challenge one and looking for a recommendation.
    Thanks

  • Do you have latex tubes and are you looking for something to carry with you on a ride?

  • Vittoria pitstop for emergencies in that case. Otherwise Caffe Latex for a home "repair"

  • Thanks very much for the recommendations đź‘Ť

  • had a rear tyre come unglued today on its third shakedown/training ride (all in wet CX conditions, not racing)

it just looks like a total failure to adhere. possibly something like this:

but in my case, edge contact was good. it just looks like the middle never stuck. the rim and base tape were completely wet when i pulled it off

got a race on saturday so looking for quick AF solutions, to be honest

  • You’ll never get the fucker off with 3 coatings of glue

  • Effetto mariposa carogna tape

    Where’s the race?!

  • Effetto mariposa carogna tape

Seconded. Damned fine stuff, when applied correctly.

  • I used to go for glue and tape for CX tubs, but Effetto Mariposa Carogna tape now means I just need to use that.

  • Thanks. Will do that. FWIW I used 3 layers on the rim and 2 on the tub but it was the universally unrecommended conti glue... perhaps the layers were too thin? Makes me worried for the front now

  • Where’s the race?!

broughton hall (which I assume is somewhere in lancashire – i should check this) facilitated by hope

  • re. the carogna tape: ordered some for weds delivery and want to get ahead of myself

does the rim want stripping clean with that red gel remover stuff? i have that.

  • does the rim want stripping clean with that red gel remover stuff? i have that.

Yes. As clean as possible and don't sand the rim for the carogna tape.

  • so removing the backing tape when the tyre has quite tacky glue on it is fun...

  • so I rolled a tub in a cross race a couple of weeks back and the tyre got very muddy in the process. It's a pretty new FMB tyre so I'm keen to reglue it, but obvioulsy I need to clean the base tape. It was taped on so there's no glue residue but there is a lot of mud in it.

What would be the best thing to use? Is just a good wash with soapy water sufficient or do I need to use something else like https://www.effettomariposa.eu/products/eau-de-carogna-adhesion-primer

  • I've used soapy water. It didn't get it back to white but it has seemed to have adhered to rims no problem since

  • The Eau de Carogna is great for priming the base tape if you're using Effeto Mariposa tape. It'll be bugger all use for cleaning the base tape though. For that you'll need some warm water, a detergent, a toothbrush and some elbow grease. Doesn't really matter what detergent - they all basically do the same thing. Washing-up liquid, washing powder, car shampoo, whatevs.

Soak the tub in soapy water, scrub away with the toothbrush, rinse well, leave to dry. Then refit.

  • There's another tape to choose from, from Caden the wheelbuilder. It's been around for a few years, but Caden is an Australian company, hardly known in the UK. Run by triathlete Ben Caden. He's a big believer in tubs and tape. Says it's not true that tape has a higher RR than glue. (Some say this negates the speed advantage of tubs vs clinchers.)

The tape is made by 3M. Ben got it through a friend there. He says it peels off easily if you leave your wheels in the sun. (I hope this doesn't indicate the obvious drawback.) He's done a vid recommending tape rather than glue. https://youtu.be/vV1X4fWsCfk
He says glue is wonky and bumpy. Transcript here https://carbonbikewheels.com.au/eu/tubular-rim-tape-or-glue

Tape can be bought with free postage worldwide. 12m for 35 euros. Effetto is many times more expensive. Widths are 24 or 20mm. The 20 is out of stock.

Tape and wheels have happy reviews at weightweenies.
