To folks who have used Macs with Catalina, and are now using Monterey - what am I missing, not having updated my MBP yet?
I tried Big Sur briefly, and really disliked the rainbow-y look, and didn't find it gives me new functions that are useful to me, frankly, so went back to Catalina.
Is Montery worth it?
Also wondering if my machine will get slower with the new OS (still on Intel here - is Montery "optimized" for Apple Silicon or does that not really matter)?
Thanks!

I've recently upgraded my Early 2015 Macbook Pro to Monterey. I haven't noticed it getting slower or any particular change, apart from -K being deprecated from ssh-add.
Is Montery worth it?
IMHO it's always worth staying fairly current.

Running Monterey on a 2018 mini. No difference in speed compared to earlier versions. If you dig colourful and bubbly design I'd say go for it

I hate colourful and bubbly design, that's the main problem I have with it 😅
There isn't a way to switch to a more monocrome / muted / "pro" design, is there?@jellybaby thanks for your feedback as well

You can change the accent colour from multicolour to grey, or another colour, if you fancy. IME you will stop noticing the UI changes in a couple of days.

Oh right, yeah that is limiting

Another thing - what backbacks do people use that fit a 16" and make good use of the allowed cabin luggage dimensions?

Also tempted. But nah shouldn’t.

Got my girlfriend a MacBook Air M1 for Christmas, 16GB.
Fuck me, I’m disappointed in my own MacBook Pro 2012 after firing that Air up. Must resist….

It’s a 9 year old Mac to be fair… I’d be fucking disappointed if the MBA wasn’t miles better.
Wife’s just picked up an M1 MBA this week too. Loves it so far.

Yeah just being sarcastic haha. I did upgrade mine to an SSD about a year ago which was a huge improvement. It’s still good enough for my (mostly) photo editing requirements.
I might even consider an IPad Pro instead of a MacBook as a future purchase.

These are great - get the keypad case and a pencil and it’s total game changer awesome

Oh I do, I use it as a mini edit station on the fly, it's great. That M1 chip is brilliant. I've had to upgrade to the wifi + cellular model. Hotspotting on my phone was fine, but since moving in with my partner the internet is bloody prehistoric (8 down, 0.2 up), so I might as well have the ipad as a hub for 5G whilst home which is super speedy.

The monitor which went off to repair with LG has now apparently been written off due to it being "uneconomical to fix". It's an LG-27qn880.
I've now got £350 credit to spend with Ebuyer or LG, and I was looking at the LG 23.7'' UltraFine™ 4K Monitor for Mac as a replacement. Or is there anything else I should be looking at which will play nicely with a Mac around the 24"-27" size?

Anyone here has any experience upgrading a Macbook Pro mid-2012 from the alleged max 8GB RAM to 16GB RAM?
Just wondering if I'd notice any real difference.

I've got the 27" version of that 4k screen. The stand is flimsy but the screen is fantastic. I'd say it's well worth the extra monies to get a proper high res monitor

I have the for mac ultrafine (23.7) and recommend, but i thought it was discontinued

I upgraded a 2009 MacBook Pro with an SSD and maxed out the RAM which made a massive difference to the performance. I imagine it would be the same for a 2012 if you don't already have an SSD.

I thought it was too, but was on the phone with LG yesterday who kept saying it's still the current line up. They're going to get back to me with a timescale for delivery which should be interesting if it is discontinued.

Thanks, I upgraded to SSD already which was a major difference indeed.
Just wondering how much difference I’d notice by just upgrading the RAM. I’m currently at 8 RAM which is the maximum according to Apple itself. Unofficially however it seems you can upgrade it to 16GB for this model.

Rumoured to be around £2.5k though so....
Anyone interested in a 11" iPad Pro M1 512gb? Mint condition, barely used, £600?
