It was like Channel 5 somehow acquired the rights to make the sequel.

And then let a bunch of Summer interns write and direct.

I don't think that's true at all, it's very consistent with their other output except for the first Matrix film. Once they had the success to do what they want it's all pretty shit.

Checks out but would add in Bound as being decent pre OG Matrix and it all not ending well

Fair point. I use the first Matrix as my reference, as 2 and 3 don't bear mentioning.
