  • I fitted Lithium a few years ago and it's worked very well but recently I've had a problem after longish fast runs where the alternator stops charging the battery, then with normal traffic speeds it starts charging again. Possibly reg/rec overheating because the Lithium works differently, maybe just old bike and the alternator needs servicing.

I used to think Lithium was pretty straight forward but it does seem to have some hidden complications.

  • Afaik Lithiums need a different max charge voltage. You can damage them/circuitry running a Pb regrec. I got schooled on it by the mechanics, and they got sick of removing busted lithiums from bikes that now they refuse to consider them. When they work, great, but you need to do some work.

  • It's pretty simple to fit an adjustable reg/rec to my bike. One of the leading experts on R80's is called Snowbum, he goes into the tiny details in a pretty mad way. Ultimately he doesn't have too much against Lithium but doesn't recommend it for normal use. My problem is diagnosing the problem, I could buy a normal battery and see if the problem goes away but I'd rather fix the problem and keep the lithium if possible. The weight benefits are great.
