Might make a nice hill climb build...
Just say'n 😎
Yeah, rear wheel... I recind my comment. -
• #46978
Ahhh, gold chain. I see it now.
-
• #46979
It is a hill climb build, no? Suspect the stem was chosen for weight rather than because they thought it looks good.
No excusing that back wheel tho.

It‘s a 5.4kg stainless hillclimb bike and I reckon the rear wheel lacing has to do with the fact the spokes are carbon strings:

That’s interesting, is there some benefit in twisting them together then? This revelation could help push it from anti into functional .. 😄

No, in all circumstances it would be better to have them straight. Twisting them like that will do nothing but compromise the stiffness and strength of the wheel.

Got to love how butthurt people get about snowflake wheels!
-
• #46984
There absolutely is a benefit to twisted or 'snowflake' spoking; it allows the rest of us to spot a pillock at 50 paces. The same sort of idiot who would specify a steel frame for a hillclimb bike having failed to notice that carbon fibre is a thing.

They dont look very good imo, aside from the usual disadvantages
-
• #46986
I do find it funny that it's not popular on the fixie forum though.
-
• #46987
Yeah there's a name for people like that.
-
• #46988
I believe that everyone has the inalienable right to buy wheels which cost more, function worse and are heavier than conventional spoking.

I haven’t found any additional info on the wheels. This is from isens insta:
We were asked by our friends at TSC Wilmslow to build a bike to compete in the National Hill climb championships this year. The aim was to build the lightest steel framed bike we could, without compromising on functionality or safety (so no drillium or cutting off drops etc...) so the bike would still be as much (type 2) fun to ride Hill climbing as it would be on a Sunday Salida.

I have opened the door and wished them a fond farewell, trispoke can stay. In the meantime, my beaten lead Americas Cup yacht project is looking great, coming soon on Insta.
I will not be deterred by the partial success of my sheet lead Zeppelin.

Ah, Service Course Wilmslow, yep, that thing doesn't need pedals as it's not going anywhere, it'll just sit in the window with the other insta built bikes.
-

Fair play, their bikes do look very grammable indeed. But tbf, I don’t mind people spending their money on bikes like that - they support creative frame builders and it’s certainly more entertaining for us than if they spent their Money exklusively on expensive watches or whatever. They also had @larsenroad ‘s stribe with @tijmen ‘s bags on display for an exhibition, does that mean it doesn‘t get ridden either?
-
• #46994
It got ridden in the national hill climb, assuming they put pedals on it for that.

Apparently Berd (who make the spokes) reccommend that spoke pattern.
Obviously spokes made of string for a tiny weight saving don't really make sense, but then in many ways hill climbs don't make sense. -
• #46996
Hill climbs certainly don't make sense for me at a skinny race weight of 11:2. Steel frames for anyone trying to reduce bike weight make no sense whatsoever.
-
• #46997
I thought it was one of the more interesting bikes at the show. Pedals or not.
Regarding Berd spokes I have a friend that races XC with the national team. He's also quite a weight weenie and built a 1 kg complete set that I believe he races with.

As a starting point, shouldn’t a custom frame fit the owner ?
-
• #46999
Some serious #internetbikefit right here from a single picture (wihout the rider on it).
-

No doubt it has been set up as pictured to fit the rider, but if I spent the money on custom and ended up with that spacer stack I wouldn’t be very happy.
I am sure someone will happily explain why the spacer stack is a design feature here.
A screen larger than that on your phone? It is the precise point where taste and money fuck off in opposite directions. It doesn't have pedals and almost certainly never will. Whatever, Instagram likes will make it amaaaazing.
