I actually saw someone on roller skis this evening on my commute home! He went through a crossing on Kings Ave at a fair rate of knots - i did wonder if it was you as there can't be more than 3 people in the UK who own them. He was going downhill in the dark, which seemed a decidedly ropey proposition

So much love for Markus Eder. Amazing calm style and so strong in the air
His run on fiederbrun in the FWT a few years ago was pretty smooth
He's awesome in Days of our youth too

Feel like I should get some nordic skis as there are maintained trails right by my house. Hated it when I tried it before but that was on ancient skis borrowed from my FIL. Someone told me it’s a world of difference if you get properly fitted with your own skis. Are they right?

Ha! You'd be surprised. I reckon it's closer to a couple of hundred, maybe more, in London and the SE. A lot of the armed forces Nordic teams do it in the summer too. I haven't been to one of the training sessions at Hyde Park or Dorney lake but I think 30+ people turn up for those.

How ancient were the skis?
Are we talking cross country or downhill?

Word on the street is that France has closed the door to people from the UK.

We have more on the restrictions France is announcing on travellers. The new measures will be officially put out later, but their substance is now clear: from Saturday, people coming from the UK will be required to have a negative Covid test of less than 24 hours.
Once in France, they will have to self-isolate for a week, but that period of quarantine can be ended after 48 hours if they have a second negative test once in France.
Compelling reasons will be needed for entry, which includes visiting family - but not tourism or non-urgent work reasons.
The new measures apply to everyone regardless of whether they have been vaccinated.

I don't know for sure but I think there's been huge improvements in kit. Just having stable boots will make a world of difference.
Do it.

Enabled. But will wait for inevitable January sales

Damn. My Swiss trip flights for mid-January have just been revised giving me less time but in all honesty I can't see it going ahead.

Yes, looks like we are buggered.
The no-tourism thing will hopefully make the cancellation more straightforward.

I get how golf club it is to be disappointed that your ski jolly during a global pandemic isn't possible, but at this point I think its a bit unfair to rip on people because they're disappointed that they can't do the thing they enjoy doing. I'm pretty sure everybody is trying to find something to look forward to at the moment.

Tier 5 restrictions. No hot caffeinated beverages.

Risk of scalding injuries. Very sensible.

I think they meant to write "there shouldn't be more than 3 people in the UK who own them."

I would also add that some of these trips may have been booked before covid.
We have only just managed to go on a holiday that was booked in October 2019. We had to move it three times.

We cancelled our January trip to France on the back of the announcement. I must admit to being relieved. Hopefully a March trip will be possible but that may be unlikely.

Ah. Came here to ask for recommendations for ski lessons (for beginners) in Meribel / Les Deux Alpes - was planning a trip there for Jan/Feb. Suggestions still welcome but from the sounds of it might have to postpone the trip.
I guess we'll stick to Milton Keynes in the meantime.

Not sure what the restrictions will be like but if you are a novice Levi in Finland is a great choice, really laid back and you may see the Northern Lights.

Cheers - yes novices here. We were pretty set on going to France but will rethink. Thanks for the suggestion.

Would anyone know if you can drive through France to another country, or is transit banned?
-
• #1624
Highly unlikely they’d take you at your word.
But interestingly because of Schengen, you could pass into Holland or Belgium and then drive into France.

At least one ski school not doing group lessons in meribel.
Got a trip booked to Chamonix in Feb.
Not feeling to confident with these rules as we are flying to Geneva then going ove the border to France. So two sets of rules to deal with (sigh)
