I clearly still don't understand the AAA system.
How come this 200k with 1600m climb gets AA points
https://audax.uk/event-details?eventId=9321but this 200k with 2300m, does not?
https://audax.uk/event-details?eventId=9359I guess the first one has more climbs in a 100k section whereas the second one doesn't have enough over the whole 200k or in either 100k section to get points? Something like that?

Also my goal of riding a AAA SR series has run into a bit of a snag...
I already did this in 2016 apparently! :D

Wasn’t it nearly hyper?

Super Randonees SR series?

Got 60h per ride as well!

The elevation field is entered manually and is often nonsense. For the first one it looks to me like they've only entered the 1600m for the AAA first half and are ignoring the ~700m of climbing in the second half.
I suspect the second one might qualify for AAA points as RWGPS has it as 2600m, but I can't be arsed running it through the AAA machine.
tbh The AAA system is best ignored rather than trying to understand it.

Ah, I was drunk. I see what you're saying now. Yes, I think I did a few 600s that year.
I've since done a hyper.

If you run them through the thing the first one gets points the second doesn't. I'm trying to understand this.

Yes, both have about the same amount of climbing, but the first packs the majority into the first half so gets partial AAA for having over 1500m of climbing in 100km. Unfortunately the new AUK website doesn't show the eligible climbing vs total climbing figures but as Grams notes it's all entered manually so is prone to errors anyway.
Note that (apropos of nothing) I didn't come up with any of the AAA rules or awards, I just volunteered for the vacant role to administrate them for all the riders that take part as I'd already written the software to help out the previous incumbent, and it actually quite an enjoyable task.
I also see it as an example of separation of powers between the executive (board), legislature (members) & judiciary (me) - if you want to change anything, submit a motion to the AGM (or get the board to fire me!), and it is pretty idiosyncratic in places, but hey, this is audax, what do you expect?

What's the difference with these? Is it just a lower time to ride them or is there some other requirement like climbing amount?
-
• #11138
I ran it through the AAA calc and it didn't have AAA points. That's why it seemed odd to me given the climb specified for both events.
-
• #11139
I'm not 'blaming' anyone for their rules, sorry if it sounded that way. I just want to understand them better so I don't waste time riding what I think is a AAA event only to find out it doesn't qualify for the points.
For international routes is RWGPS elevation the best option to check for likely AAA points?

Yes, RwGPS should be fine for non-GB rides.

I've planned another lumpy route that has a couple of repeated bits of road - should I ping the DIY org to see if they're ok or is it bad form to use any road in the same direction twice?
-
• #11142
I believe you can use short bits but not sure where the cutoff is. More than 5% might be dodgy.
-
• #11143
Think it's ~3k of descent and climb done twice in a 104k route.

The rule is there for 'unnecessary repetition of roads' although I don't think this is ever explicitly stated.
For example, any of the 'Uts rides from Henham/Ugley that use multiple loops have no choice but to repeat certain sections of roads as there's simply no other option, if you leave some of the 'Uts you can only go left or right, so three or more loops have to repeat some roads.
If there's another option that's sensible (e.g. isn't a horrific dual carriageway or other horrible road) then try and use it, if not, and it's only a short section, then it should be fine - the general idea is that the 'rule' is there to stop people doing the same loops over and over again - if you're not doing that it should be fine.
-
• #11145
Should be fine, as long as you aren't taking the piss and doing laps. I've had to use the same valley road for a figure of 8 loop before.
If you are doing a calendar event that states AAA points, then you won't need to worry if it'll qualify for AAA points or not after the face. (Being submitted on finisher list is enough to be awarded AAA points).
For DIY mandatory routes, I try to budget in a few extra hills, just in case. -

I'll be running my first event as organiser this year, with the blessing of Brixton CC.
It's a 200km event with 3.25 AAA points, starting in Crystal Palace and finishing at Herne Hill Velodrome.

Added to my 'maybe' list. Will enter if it fits in with other commitments. -

Lumpy.
Bookmarked.

N00b question, but I was reading the RRTY rules and I think I'm right but would love to be wrong: I can't include Frontier300 as a DIY, because it has medical support and stuff like that. This is true isnt it?
Also, is off road stuff generally frowned upon for AUK shit?

No.

Number 19 answers your question.
After loads of viewings in Hastings of rubbish houses, we viewed one house in Faversham offered on it and ended up here, it's been a much better move for a multitude of reasons tbh
