Is discord good? On a tangent I was trying to decide on the best platform to host something similar and settled on Zoom, I opened discord but it didn't look super simples

Good for some things, it's sort of like having a group chat, with a live call going on at the same time, all the time. Its also really popular with some subjects, for example we used it a lot when working on crypto projects at work because everyone was using it outside of work.
