Which Tyres?

  • You’re not the only one confused hence the question!!!!

    Second question still holds.

  • Yep, apologies. I thought tubeless ready = tubeless on clincher rims, but you will need sealant (unlike the original Hutchinson tubeless which sealed fine without), and then as a totally separate thing you had hookless.

But yeah, confusing. Looks like most tubeless ready are ok for both hooked and hookless, but depends on tyre and rim manufacturers. It’s all nonsense. They’ve clearly been watching the development of bottom brackets and we’re seeing a “hold my beer” moment

  • Absolutely with you on the tyranny of compatability , it’s like the Wild West out there, oh for the days when a six speed screw on freewheel was the thing of a madman’s dreams

  • Many tubeless tyres aren’t suitable for hookless rims. There are a few brands (e.g. Schwalbe) that make everything tubeless suitable for hookless rims and a couple that are in the process of moving to hookless compatibility (conti gp5000 TL is not hookless compatible, GP5000 S TR is). There’s no way of knowing without trawling the tyre manufacturers websites, where some state if they’re suitable or not.

For 650B, tanwall, hookless and good id go for teravail, although a bit spendy

  • Thanks for the above, I did look at various manufacturers websites but they aren’t exactly clear.

Looks like Teravail are top contender at the moment.

  • My mate thinks that tan wall gravel tyres, in this instance WTB Nanos, are stronger and less susceptible to slices than black versions......can't be right?

  • And recommendations for a mixed surface 650b tyre, 42ish wide for hookless rims, not mad money (and tan wall a bonus but not essential)?

I've always wanted to try wtb resolute but want more than 42mm

  • Fake tanwalls are for insta rather than being ridden and so definitely less likely to puncture.

  • Blackwalls look better in every case on every bicycle in every discipline....and I am Insta daft.

  • If anything it would be the opposite, they're the same thing with an extra tiny layer of black rubber

  • Anyone got any experience of g-one bite in 27.5x2.0?

  • Blackwalls look better in every case on every bicycle in every discipline

    mods pls issue ban

  • any Dirty Reiver tyre suggestions? It'll be on my cross bike, but I'll have room for something around 38-40mm by the looks

  • I used Gravelking SKs and got around with no problems. Having said that, I saw a lot of people with all sorts of tyres fixing punctures the whole way around.

  • My group had:
    700*38 g one bite
    700*45 michelin maybe?
    650*47 sendero
    650*50 race kings
and were all fine tbh. It wasn't super wet.

  • Interesting mold change (?) in these AC tires. First one had a wobble so they sent a replacement and it's totally different inside.

  • Can’t decide between, WTB Resolute vs Schwable G-one allroad.
Need to be 650B for my Slate and less than 47, anything else I should consider?

  • They're both quite different tyres. What kind of surfaces will you doing mostly?

  • Pfft. A bit of everything in all seasons.
I have The G-ones already but I guess it’s more are they different enough and which should go on the better wheelset.
    Or go for something else?

  • If it's really mixed use, I'd run the smallest knobs I could get away with. No point churning tractor tyres around if half the riding is on the road. If it's mostly dirt I'd look for bigger volume, more aggressive knobbage because I'm shit off-road and want as much grip and suspension as possible. If it's remote and repair might be a pain in the arse I'd pick heavier, more durable options.

  • I had Resolutes on the Tripster very early on but it was used on the road so I changed to Horizons and sold the Resolutes without really giving them a go on dirt. Then went to WTB Ventures but they weren't knobby enough for what I was riding and moved to 50mm Cinturato M, which I've since moved to the rear for mud clearance and stuck a 47mm Tourareg on the front.

  • Now I have a set of 700C road wheels that I can swap on the Tripster, I'll probably leave the more heavy duty, knobbier tyres on the 650B wheels because they'll be for proper off-road stuff and not much road. That's why I bought a set of 50mm X'plor tyres - heavy weight for less fuss when touring off-road in Scotland.

The missus used an Ultrabite up front and WTB um Raddler rear (700C though). The WTB flatted early but both held on for the ATM trip and she didn't report any issues. I like the look of the Ultrabite so I'd like at that for myself for off-road stuff. But I've got enough tyres to last a while now.

Schwalbe seem to have the best fitting tyres, so their setup usually seems easier than others.

Can you get the GK+ for 650B? They're a prick to fit but were fine for Badlands. Relatively soft casing so at least should be pretty quick and even knobs so predictable.

  • Schwable have been good but less so now it’s much wetter. Although I’d been riding 28mm slicks on the same surfaces, bridle ways, tracks and across fields.
I think they should go on the carbon rims and wait for some Resolutes on the alu boxes.
But old tyres on new rims grates a little haha

  • It's a question of speed. I routed onto a sloppy dirt track last weekend on the road wheels and rode it just a lot slower than I would on the gravel wheels (this was after I'd flatted on poxy Chiltern flint on the road ffs). Resolutes should be fine I just didn't hang onto them long enough to find out. I've got a 650Bx47 Venture here and another in storage actually but if you're a tart about old tyres it's not much use. Also have some Vittoria Saguros or whatever they're called here but they're 2.1 MTB tyres so you need pretty huge clearances

  • I had the 700x35 All Round last year , couldn't fault them.
Easy to set up on narrow rims 20mm internal,
they would unseat each time I had to put sealant in, and go back up whithout a itch.
    No visitations.
    Used well into mtb territory,
going ski touring last winter twice a week,
long road rides in the summer.

    I m light at 70kg,
run them with 20psi or less,
    maybee that helps.

    I use Overrides 38mm now,
    a bit more supple,
    lighter.

    Same vibe,
I was worried and bought a mech repair kit,
    still haven't used it.
