The vast amount of chat on r/Formula1 still seems to be pro Max / anti Lewis / FIA conspiracy
I guess the same was in effect when Ferrari were winning lots (though there was a little more to the FIA / Ferrari relationship) but I really don't understand how many people stick blindly to Max after races like todays.

Penalty does not alter the race result in any way though
So not really a penalty at all.
Just like Hamilton's in Silverstone. Personally I'm not 100% sold on this idea of looking at the incident itself and not allowing the severity of the outcomes to dictate the penalty, but that's what they've settled on. Can't have it both ways.
Brake-testing another driver is a total dick move.
Agree on this though. Personally I don't think this was an intentional brake test, but an attempt to ensure Hamilton had passed before the DRS line (personally I don't see any issue with this bit). Surely it'd be an utterly daft move to attempt as the risk of having some race-ending damage to the diffuser/gearbox is pretty high from being hit right from behind?
Though if what I've heard is true with Red Bull getting the message much earlier than Mercedes about Hamilton being let through, to the point that Hamilton was only told as he was going into the back of Verstappen. That's a bit of a clusterfuck from Masi, again.

Well that was intense. Shenanigans aside there were some some moments of brilliance from Max over the entire weekend but i think the result was correct and reflects that the better driver (on the day) took the win. Not so easy for Lewis to look good when you're main opponent is rewriting the rules but it was a monster drive and to be honest i'm fairly happy Max is making his life tough atm.

Same when Red Bull/Vettel were on their 4 year streak. This Mercedes team have been much more dominant that either Red Bull or Ferrari in those examples, and for a much more sustained period.
I mean people were acting worse than this when Vettel was winning and those 4 years gave us what I'd say is 2 of the 4 best season finales that I can remember since the late 90's (alongside 2007/2008). I'd say Ferrari only really had 2 seasons (2002/2004) that were in the same ballpark of what Mercedes have normally had over the past few seasons (excluding this season).
I'd say the pro-Hamilton bias that then gets sent out on the world feed probably also is a significant factor. Of course each nation's TV coverage will have their biases if their nation has a driver in the fight, but I'm sure we'd be sick of hearing the constant pro-Max opinions if we had to listen to Ziggo Sport's coverage.

Sainz doing his classic job of driving an amazing drive completely outside of the TV camera's viewpoint
Yeah i thing we missed out on a lot of good driving yesterday. Your old pal Seb was getting stuck in but not convinced that was one of his better days.

He's got an unwanted record now though...

I'd like to think I'm relatively unbiased (sure, I'd rather someone other than Mercedes/Hamilton won at this point, though it's hard to effectively be willing on someone who's pretty regularly resorting to Senna/Schumacher-esque running people off track). But watching Max come out on Friday on a track that no ones raced on and be full-commitment from the word go, and that final lap in Q3. Those were pretty damn awesome to watch.
I'm not really surprised that Max has started pushing his luck even further since Brazil, it's become pretty apparent (IMO) that Mercedes have really upped their game (whether it's the new engine, or the fancy wing, or whatever), and sees the title slipping away. And while it's not pretty to watch, it's not exactly surprising that it's happening. Last time we had a last-race decider we had Hamilton intentionally slowing down to try to back Rosberg up into Vettel & Verstappen. Was it dirty, damn right. Was it surprising? I'd say not really.

Didn't get to see much of the Tsunoda incident, but it felt like a 50:50 to me, yet Tsunoda got a penalty for it.
The Raikkonen one was a clear Raikkonen at fault IMO. Credit it to him for trying to hang around the outside of that corner with a race to go at the age of 42 or whatever, but that was never going to come off.
On a tangential note, I still can't believe we spent the last few minutes watching Hamilton drive unchallenged to win while Ocon & Bottas were battling for 3rd. It wasn't quite "Hey let's pull away from the only on-track overtake at Monaco to show you a replay of a crash from a few laps ago" at Monaco, but it was pretty damn frustrating!

Maybe, but like many records it's a bit of a useless one isn't it? He's never really had a decent opportunity for a win, so it's not like he's been throwing them away. He's been driving great in his first season with the team against a driver who's pretty well regarded, and is basically the team's long-term hope for winning championships again.
Definitely biased on this one, but I stand by the opinion that Ferrari have the strongest driver pairing of any team at the moment. Possibly a good thing that they don't have a championship-winning car at the moment as they'd probably get into a McLaren 2007 type scenario where their drivers are too busy taking points off each other they'd throw away the championship.

I think it's a useful stat if only to offer some insight into how that person might perform under pressure for a win (if Ferrari are in the mix next season). Being the bridesmaid and never the bride for that length of time will definitely affect his mentality.

U mad bro?
This season, I'd say it's probably Red Bull but it has to be Mercedes in 2022 with Russell joining the team. -

Maybe if he was a team fighting at the front, but for a mid-field team his only chances are the sort of wacky scenarios leading to Ocon/Gasly winning, I wouldn't think that's so much the case. And given Leclerc's only had 2 wins (should've had another one this year of course), I'd say the level of pressure he's under is not too different (arguably more as he's effectively Ferrari's lead driver).
This season, I'd say it's probably Red Bull but it has to be Mercedes in 2022 with Russell joining the team.
I'd honestly rank Mercedes above Red Bull this year (I'd rank Perez above Bottas as a driver in general, but that Red Bull seems to be shit to drive for anyone bar Verstappen). Bottas & Perez are routinely nowhere near Hamilton & Verstappen. But yeah, next year I'd say Mercedes will be hard to beat in that regard. Especially if Russell performs as well as he did in his race with Mercedes in Bahrain.

Perez above Bottas
Qualifying - yes.
In a race, I feel like he's massively underperformed given the car he has under him. He's terrible at race starts and can't come through the field like Hamilton can with the same engine.RE: Sainz, I guess we'll see if Ferrari are there or there about next year. I'm really looking forward to the shake up that's coming.

Whilst i don't condone anything that puts another drivers health at risk Red Bull/Cobra Kai are at least making it a hard fight for Merc.

That was a complete shitshow of a race. I thought about commenting last night but decided not to.

I think this sums it up for me. Being ex-Red Bull, it's difficult to not be biased. But we're seeing exactly that ^ and I think we're seeing desperate moves.

Hopefully the season will end without Verstappen injuring others and/or himself. His attitude reminds me of investment bankers and other hyper competitive professionals, who seem to believe it’s someone else’s job to rein them before they hurt someone.

I think Max is at the LEAST a slightly better human than his dad. Even die hard Dutch fans think Jos is a massive dick.
His main redeeming feature is Jos drove the Simtek S951 which I think rates as one of the best looking F1 cars of all time

Just wanted to share this fantastic video, on the BRM V16.
A small company has just started a limited production run of exactly replicas from factory diagrams.
The engine was incredibly loud and had a unique roar.
16 cylinder with twin super chargers at only 1.5 litres capacity, it was a masterpiece of engineering with components that resemble watch parts rather then engines.

New Abu Dhabi layout does look better for general racing. Though I expect the removal of those slow chicanes & opening up the final few corners may take away what was once a Red Bull advantage at the track.
This has been an awesome season, but at this point I just want it to be over and hope that next season has a few more folks in the fight. Would be nice if more of the discussions didn't devolve into us vs them like they tend to in most other big sports.
On a tangential note, just remembered this which is probably one of my favourite Abu Dhabi moments:

Also, I know it's only Friday practice and there's nothing we can really read into, but the performance difference on the first DRS straight here is ridiculous (granted Verstappen takes a bit of a tighter line onto the straight):

Hamilton faster than Verstappen even with Verstappen getting a tow. Will be interesting to see how the rest of the weekend plays out, but a DNF is the only thing I can see stopping Hamilton winning here.

• #8299
Meh.
Neither we’re seriously injured and these are two of the reasons both Hamilton and Verstappen get paid big bucks. If they just went round and nobody crashed, half the people wouldn’t watch and they wouldn’t have a sport.
You can’t just pick and chose when it’s appropriate to show this footage.

So not really a penalty at all. I thought Max was a bit of a dick before today. Today he earned Total Cunt status. Brake-testing another driver is a total dick move. No excuses, no forgiveness.
