We couldn't get my MIL out of the hospital for over two months, even though they had no need to be in hospital (beyond having full on dementia) because of how disjointed various services were / are, even though we had everything lined up for them to have round the clock care (which we had to rearrange more than once).
My FIL died suddenly in his sleep, a convenience which was very apposite of the man he was.
My father died at home by choice. Being a doctor he knew how miserable and undignified dying in hospital would be.
Yeah - this bit of middle age is a bit shit.
