  • The violence part to my tag was related to Bishop Bonner, or 'Bloody Bonner', who persecuted Protestant heretics in Mary's reign in a particularly unpleasant way, killing over 100 (some say close to 300). The story goes that he sat under that mulberry tree while he plotted. Not sure if the age of the tree can vouch for that, but anyway. For quite a time maps refer to this place as Bonner's Hall before its grounds effectively became part of Victoria Park in the mid 1840s and the house torn down. The Chest Hospital was then built on the site. Interestingly the nearby gates and bridge to Victoria Park (that many of us I'm sure have gone through/over) also take Bonner's name.
