Button had the talent, but he also had a car that was a year ahead of everyone else's. I'll always respect the fact that he took a significant salary cut to keep the factory open.

At least for the first half of the season! I remember the end of that season being super tense with Red Bull massively catching up during the second half of the season.

Oh for sure, though I'd definitely put him a level below Alonso/Kimi/Hamilton/Vettel, more on the Webber/Rosberg level.
Though to be fair that may well just have been because he didn't have a decent stint in a championship winning car (though I guess he did fare relatively well alongside Hamilton at McLaren).

So apparently Massi is now saying Max should have been penalised. It obviously didn't affect who won, but I do wonder if Mercedes knew that Max would have 5 seconds taken off whether Bottas would have attempted to get close enough to steal second.

He did.

Just realised this. For some reason I thought it was 7 seconds not 3. Interesting.

If it was indeed punishable, this plus Belgium means a Verstappen win by a small handful of points will be a tad awkward.

Indeed. I assume they cannot take retrospective action?
Asked by Autosport if the FIA had access to the pictures when making
the call during the race, Masi confirmed that it did not."No, it was only the cameras that are broadcast, as I've said before,
which is basically what we have access to throughout,” he said.Masi said that the footage, plus that from both cars' 360-degree
cameras, will only be looked at after the weekend.“The forward facing, the 360, there's all of the camera angles that we
don't get live that will be downloaded and we'll have a look at them
post-race,” he said. "It hasn't been obtained yet. It's been
requested."Masi conceded that the forward facing footage could be a smoking gun,
if, for example, it shows Verstappen steering towards Hamilton. -

It's like the old days when Ferrari had an arrangement with the FIA which differed from that of the rest of the teams. Interesting how things change. Back then it was "fines" as opposed to time penalties.
From my front room, it was fairly obvious to see that Max purposefully opened the steering. Surely worth a 5 or 10 second stop/go penalty?

That is the way I saw it too. Interesting hearing some try and justify it by saying they both went off the track, in my thoughts that made it even worse.

Long time watcher of F1, first time reader of this thread.
If he went in too hard to try and match Lewis's pace and the car oversteered even slightly, he'd have had to open the steering to counter it. He's having to make a tighter turn than Lewis and at a higher entry speed than he had been previously doing.
That doesn't absolve him of any wrong doing, because he would have known that making that move, there was potential for having to counter steer and cause a crash.

Didn't they both recently say they'd race cleanly and fairly?
-
• #8165
Only one of them actually knows how to do that.
See Monza...

Indeed. I assume they cannot take retrospective action?
What do the rule books say?
If they say nothing, or that they cannot take retrospective action, or that (final?) decisions in real time must be made with more than just the live TV feed, then the FIA even talking about this stuff makes the FIA look stupid.

Doesn't open it up, but doesn't really turn in properly either.
Outbraked Lewis, but was too fast to be able to make the corner without spinning or at least going a bit sideways.

So apparently Massi is now saying Max should have been penalised.
If he did say this it's pretty much an admission that they fucked up, right?
If they had any doubt over whether the incident needed investigation, they could have just flagged it as needing investigation, then actually investigated it properly, in real time or after the race.
Weird.

Outbraked himself.
ftfy.
The onboard does show a load of understeer so it was a case of him not having the grip rather than just not attempting to make the apex. Still his own error though.
-
• #8170
He didn't actually try to turn towards the apex of the corner and looked in his mirror at Lewis whilst doing it. Slam dunk for me.

Very much this, surprised they deemed no investigation necessary without even seeing the onboards. Looking forward to hearing the reasoning behind that.

He didn't actually try to turn towards the apex
He does, but because of his entry angle the apex comes too early. From then on, he's drifting outwards, trying to balance his speed (too much) with his grip (too little) without losing control. That doesn't mean it's not a dick move btw; I suspect he's gone in knowingly too hot with the intention to move Lewis outwards.
It's pretty similar to the Silverstone incident with role reversal, except it doesn't end with Lewis hitting a tyre wall.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?

Classic divebomb. Straight line to the apex, then try and sort it. If he’d managed to stay on the track, I’d say fair enough but that was way over.

Not me Guv.
I think Button was a superb driver and a more than worthy champion.I've just checked my old posts and I was always nice about him.
(late-career Massa, on the other hand, I evidently didn't have much time for. And 8 years ago I predicted Hamilton could better Schumacher if he put the work in, but then spoiled it by claiming he wouldn't!)
Only started watching around 97/98, so only real knowledge is based on interviews, SkyF1 punditry (where he's less of a dick than Johnny Herbert, which is a bit of a low bar to be fair), and that Pizza Hut ad with Murray Walker.
Would also probably throw Button in there also with the "Champions who weren't a dick", though I recall him being a bit of an arse in the early 00's. Maybe we need another list for "Champions who weren't a dick (but were a bit of an arse)". Also damn fortunate to be a WDC!
