  • Good q; no immediate sharp pain, but a growing burning sensation, without any specific point or increase when I press the location, which is around the bony outside of right hip joint (nothing on groin side). This is what makes me think it’s inflammation under the itb, plus it’s calmed by ibuprofen. Bursitis comes up a bit when I search

Also sensation of clicking/grinding in the joint, but zero pain from this. Visually, the leg appears twisted outward.

It’s so bad and I’m so frustrated with waiting (2+ years) I’m looking into private options, but want to properly establish what’s going on before dropping £££ for initial consultation. Thanks for any advice

  • It is always or after doing exercise? I had hip joint pain after doing running for a while and it turned out to be an muscle imbalance, sorted by doing ITB band stretches.

  • Zero pain when cycling, running, walking or moving, either during or after.

Sitting on ergonomic office chairs, sofas, beds = flares up and becomes unbearable. …Am I allergic to comfort?

I did a few ITB band stretch sessions but couldn’t feel anything different. These were cautious b/c I’m unsure if I was going to make anything worse, but hoping advice here can guide me to commit to a program if needed.

  • I'm praying there is a convergence of the hub and hip conversations and I can replace the bearings - but with the loan of a long-lost size-standard press made in a country that has ceased to exist.

  • That's the one - thanks!

  • I should probably measure it in any case, I suppose.

  • I can replace the bearings

One of the few cases where it's worth considering ceramic bearings for cycling

  • Sounds like it's not related to what I had but one way of checking is to lie on your back on the floor with your legs up against a wall and see if one foot reaches higher than the other

  • Thanks for his suggestion to.

Weren't they all just the same hub (these and the Formula hubs), rebadged?

  • If you manage to find a solution over the internet that works, it's going to be by luck rather than design - There's could be any number of reasons that you experience pain while seated.

For a start, how do you know that you aren't sitting in a weird position?

  • Visually, the leg appears twisted outward.

Have you tried twisting the leg inward?

That’ll be £200 please settle with my assistant on the way out thank you.

Not a medical doctor. Have had a lot of injuries, so know a bit about describing pain. Please take everything I say with a grain of well-intentioned salt, and don’t cause yourself pain if you don’t know the answer to any question.

So it’s a slow onset, not very localised, burning sensation when you sit, correct? Any trauma? Is it easy to predict or is it random? It it possibly influenced by accumulated effort or positioning during the day? Does your ITB or any muscles feel painful to the touch at rest?

Might not help you, but I developed an odd pain in the 9, 10:30 and 12 o’clock positions of my left leg, near the iliac crest. It happened when walking, cycling or sometimes sitting, and would cause me to limp it became so painful. I figured out it was the waist band of my trousers that was impinging on my TFL / hip flexors. Pulling my waist band up and using slacker slacks resolved it.

  • the waist band of my trousers that was impinging on my TFL / hip flexors. Pulling my waist band up and using slacker slacks resolved it.

Nothing has been completely resolved for me, but my issues were tremendously relieved when I did the same. It’s a good thing it coincided with the workwear trend

  • Cheers for the link and thanks again.

Think I'm going to go this route.

  • This is all super useful, thank you everyone. I wasn't expecting A solution, more just prompts, joining the dots, and insights/experience from the forum, and it's really helpful. Eseman, that's actually more engagement in the twist than I've had from professionals - you are clearly talented and have a prosperous career ahead.

So it’s a slow onset, not very localised, burning sensation when you sit, correct? yes, not sharp when I sit, but builds over 15 mins to be excruciating burning.
Any trauma? No trauma, although I will have crashed onto it at some points in the past.
Is it easy to predict or is it random? relatively predictable - to the point where if I know I'm going on a long journey (train, car), I'll take ibuprofen.
It it possibly influenced by accumulated effort or positioning during the day? Does your ITB or any muscles feel painful to the touch at rest? It doesn't seem to be - but I make sure I sit on a hard surface, and avoid regular office chairs. And no, not any actual direct pain when touched; I'd say it's similar sensation to a break, but without the sharpness when agitated.
Also v conscious the leg doesn't twist when I sleep, sometimes feels like it's coming right out the socket. I'm managing this now, but the pain used to wake me regularly, and it'd be a battle between trying to resolve or taking painkillers to sleep.

Part of my frustration is that I've been told multiple times the leg-length discrepancy isn't the cause. I estimate this to be 25mm by placing different thickness books under my left heel until hips are level. I understand the body corrects itself, and getting absolutely level isn't necessary, but @TW, @Eseman, @withered_preacher, to your points (unnatural pressures impeding regular function), I strongly suspect this is the equivalent of sitting badly/waistband pressure, causing tension. I've built up heel wedges over the last 6 months, and now wearing +15mm in my left shoe, (on my cycling cleat I've added +3mm) which has made a big difference.

Anyway! This gives me confidence that I'm on the right track. I'll do some proper ITB band work, physio to strengthen, keep on with the heel wedge. Will look into physio for the twist, although I will prob leave alone and manage with position/posture. Would hate to wreck my knee too. I'm am on a priority list for a scan, 4+ months wait, so no idea how long this will take ...but when it does, I'll know more about the inner workings/surfaces/impingement/bearing replacement from there.

Thanks all, really useful, even typing the problem out has prompted more ideas; Please all download your Hip Doctor Phd certificates from the internet.

  • you are clearly talented and have a prosperous career ahead.

Thank you that’s kind of you to say. I’ve put you down as a referee on my CV, really appreciate it thanks!

I hope you’re able to find a solution soon. I haven’t experienced anything quite like your injury; I did strain/sublux both my shoulders as a teen - the humerus head slightly twisting or shifting out of the socket, especially when I slept but sometimes randomly, caused an onset of intense pain that would wake me up or prevent me sleeping all together. I managed it with RICE and a lot of ibuprofen gel, and +15 years later I can move my left shoulder in and out of the socket, but no pain.

  • Whiteboards for home office, anything specific to consider?

    Enamel? Lacquered steel?

I want something solid (rather than just the stuff that comes in rolls) and it should be magnetic. A pen tray would be nice. 120x90cm.

Current winner is this one: https://www.viking-direct.co.uk/en/office-depot-magnetic-whiteboard-90-x-120-cm-p-1010842

  • Also, recommendations for cheap-ish (~£60) noise cancelling wireless bluetooth headphones.

Something like the Sony WH-CH710N which can be had for ~£70 at Currys.

Need them for listening to music and for work calls. Probably 6 hours of use a day working from hom. They don't have to sound amazing (hence I'm steering clear of the Hi-Fi thread), my ears aren't great and I'm more than happy with standard iPhone wired headphones. Don't care about the mic quality as I have a separate mic.

  • steering clear of the Hi-Fi thread

..well there's a headphone thread which isn't super nerdy if you want to chek it out - https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/128063/

  • Ah, good, thanks.

[EDIT] Taken a punt on the Anker Q20's. If I don't like them then my daughter is even less discerning than I am.

  • I'm sure I've seen rubber sleeves that go on cables to reduce rubbing at the headtube. What are they called? I know of the spiral ones, but am looking for something more robust. Perhaps heat shrink over a spiral?

  • Cheers, looks like it could be a good option. Does it slide on, or would it need to be heat shrunk into place?

  • Slides on, it's quite stretchy so get the size below the OD of your cable so it stays where you put it. Lube with water to make sliding it into position easier.
