my dad took me there on our drive back from his farm house near Epinal when i was 13. really sombre experience.
sadly the lasting memory for me was my dad had been telling me all about how it's such a damaged place that even now the birds there don't sing. so he wasn't happy when I pointed out the very obvious birdsong to him while we were there.
I went to Verdun cemetery a few years back. There's supposedly 150k men buried there. Whether it's true or not, it's a truly horrifying place between the white markers (theres a significant section of muslim graves so not just crosses) and the ossuary. Impossible to comprehend the scale of death really, even when presented with that.
