Number OCD? My debut marathon time was 3:04:56. 14 years later at this year's London Marathon I was 3 seconds outside running 2:34:56. Should've tried harder. D'oh!

Ah ok, what happens if the revs just get let off, engine cuts out?

The revs are the engine speed so whilst it's in gear the revs will stay constant for that gear at that speed regardless of amount of throttle.
They could have pulled the clutch and let the revs drop to 3k as the gear would be disengaged but still show as 3rd -
