As someone who worked on the closest thing the UK government has to digital ID, it is indeed very very hard. The tech is hard, keeping it secure is very hard, the government data is terrible, commercial sources of identity are awful and doing it in a way that users understand and can use is almost impossible.
If it's complicated it's exploitable and if it's simple it doesn't work. We spent tens of millions and it basically went nowhere. -

Uk government…spent tens of millions….went nowhere
Now that’s hard to believe

That's useful, thanks

The best system of the three, if you're living on the margins of society, is here.
Nice to get an occasional reminder that Great Britain isn't the worst place in the world.

If by ‘nowhere’, it means ‘into the pockets of a few well-placed members of the chumocracy’…

Well it went to Experian, Digidentity, Secure Identity and Barclays.
As well as various contractors, consultants and civil servants (of which I was one). -

Bet the French back down pretty quickly after finding out our heroic Royal Marines battered the Americans at pretend war.

This amendment to waive the corruption judgement against Owen Paterson (dressed up as something else in the emperor's new clothes) isn't even a surprise. Nor is the whipping of Tory MPs to support it. The judgement wasn't even vaguely marginal - 'egregious case of paid advocacy', I believe was the description...
Oh for an effective opposition and some media who would call it what it is.

If it makes you feel "better" about it, the Australian government is hoping to close the Independent Commission Against Corruption in favour of a new body which is under the control of the government and isn't really going to be allowed to investigate politicians, only law-enforcement.

If they hurry up and get rid of it they can put Gladys in the clear in time to make her Federal Treasurer...

A new low even for this shower of cunts.
Of the 59 mps who have put their name to the amendment, 6 have had allegations against them upheld by the standards committee and they earn £1m between them for lobbying. -

Scotty 'I leak my texts' Morrison being underhand? You surprise me!

Impressive, but wish the article had explained which calibre of US Marine because UK Marine > US Marine. Presumably they wouldn’t choose an unsuitable unit for an important exercise, but UK Marines are an elite group, whereas any military-age American can become a US Marine by having basic physical fitness, an IQ > 79, and signing on the dotted line.
-seems I conflated Royal Marines with Royal Marine Commandos, who have a 32 week selection process.

My brother did an international exercise at Fort Brag years ago and he said the UK armed forces wiped the floor with their US counterparts (including nevy seals who he said were dog shit).

Yeah, most soldiers I know think they're better than other country's soldiers. Almost as if they're trained to think that. Funny that.

UK Marines are an elite group, whereas any military-age American can become a US Marine by having basic physical fitness, an IQ > 79, and signing on the dotted line.
Same as the Royal Marines then:
You don't need any qualifications to become a Royal Marines Commando
but must be aged 16 to 32. To be an officer, you'll need A levels or
above and must be aged 18 to 25. If you're under the age of 18, you'll
need the consent of a parent or guardian. For the Royal Marines you have to be:
At least 15 years old and 9 months when you apply Over 16 years old on
entry Under 33 years old when you begin basic trainingRoyal Marine physical eligibility is no asthma, no broken bones and BMI below 28.
