That’s not something I had ever really thought about so I really appreciate the warning. A friend of mine had his super six stripped and clear coated and it looks awesome so I figured I’d do the same since I’m not a fan of the paint scheme.
My reason for stripping the frame was purely aesthetic though, the bike will be plenty light enough without the 100g I could potentially save by stripping it so I guess now I’ll just learn to live with it as is.
Is it possible to repaint carbon without first sanding it back? -

Your Scott looks great! Pretty gnarly crash from the looks of it too

The collection of parts is coming along nicely. Mostly just waiting on the wheels now but they’re still being built.
On a side note, does anyone know what length chainring bolts I need to run a 1x narrowwide chainring on the Red crankset? Do I need a special bolt to replace the hidden bolt on the crank arm or can I use the same bolts for all 5 arms?

nice stuff.
i imagine you only need 1x chainring spacers. i installed 2x xhainrings on the same cranks and the x5 bolts were the same.
just saw the comment about that crockett. is it to internally route a di2 cable for the rear derailleur ? what is the bb type ?as an aside those calipers are not particularly light... those classic cnc ones have almost 100 grams on them

All the aftermarket 1x bolts seem to be slightly different lengths so it’s a bit confusing but I’ve got a Force CX1 chainring/spider lying around somewhere so I’ll just use those bolts for now.
The Red callipers are definitely not as light as the EE or KCNC ones but I couldn’t justify splashing out on anything too exotic for now. Will definitely be looking to upgrade them at some point but they’re still only 130g each with pads so they’re hardly boat anchors.
The Crockett frame has full internal cable routing so I assume it’s compatible with DI2 but I know nothing about DI2 so don’t take my word for it. BB is BB86.5 and the frame currently has a Wheels mfg GXP bb installed. It’s the 2019 Crockett AL frame if you want to check the specs

This needs 135g tyres....

Cool i'll have a look at the frame specs..feel free to drop me a pm with price and close up pics.
Calipers wise, i wouldn't entertain the idea of going for ee brakes or similar, but those planet-x cnc type ones that pop up regularly are under 200grams for the pair and uaually around 60 / 70 £ -

Taking a single ring of a road double probably tomorrow you can have the bolts if you want? Dunno what length they are until they're out but they are flush without spacers.

You'd be best off cutting up an old inner ring to make spacers and using the double bolts.

You can absolutely repaint without stripping the frame all the way back to bare carbon. The only reason to fully strip a frame back to carbon before repainting is to save circa 50g of weight (probably the most labour intensive/expensive way of trying to cut weight), or for the aesthetic of a clear coated bare carbon frame.

Source please?!
Already picked up the Vittoria Corsas for maximum HHSB points but if anyone has any recommendations for tubs that have decent protection but with that all important mythical tubular ride quality*, I'm all ears.

PM'd you about the Trek.
I'll definitely keep an eye out for those CNC brakes cos thats a considerable amount cheaper than any of the other weight weenie approved callipers. -

Thanks, I've got a set of bolts I can use for now but if you wouldn't mind measuring yours that would be very helpful.

Haha I'll be lucky if I can muster up 200 watts let alone 2000 so I'm not too worried.
-
• #41
Thanks, good to know, I can definitely live with just a regular paint job instead of a raw carbon finish.
-
• #42
What about those questionable carbon brakes on aliexpress that the weight weenie tourer guy on here has bought
-
• #43
The original paint job will age well IMO.

I'll measure and weigh them later just incase 👍

The thought did cross my mind, reading about how much the pivot arms bend was somewhat alarming but since when has HHSB had any concern for practicality/safety right? Might just buy a pair for the sheer novelty value
-

Its not the worst, maybe itll grow on me. Wont be repainting it any time soon anyway though

Much obliged

8mm bolts 6mm threads 21g for 5 complete
-

The ones I saw were advertised as long reach brompton style, so no idea whether they'd work on a normal road bike, but there is ee copies on aliexpress now

Turns out the bolts on my Force 1x chainset are identical to the ones on the Red chainset they just have extra little washer/spacer things, so that takes care of the bolt dilemma and any worries about snapping crank arms. Had no idea that the spider on my 1x chainset was actually a double!
Thanks again for checking!
I recently got my old Scott Foil back from the paint shop. Stripped the paint myself, mostly with a sharp blade and light wet n dry before sending to Kustomflow. Project "Triggers Broom", I like to call it 😂
Wrecked the frame years ago in a local road race, had it repaired, rode/ raced it a bit more, before deciding to overhaul it. Currently in process of rebuilding it.
