Is it any harder to renew an expired passport than one with some time left on it?

It's my blue (haha Brexit wankers) Aussie passport. Not much point renewing if I've no plans going back, right?

Not usually unless it’s a very old passport or you have an ‘unusual’ (no offence) claim to nationality

Nope, I've renewed it whilst I've been in the UK in the past and I'm definitely a fucking Aussie.
