Not helpful to you but my Samsung TV does this perfectly wirelessly and not just for Samsung phones I think.

Anything that I should look for in terms of specs to see if a phone definitively does/doesn't do this?
Usually the spec lists either HDMI or Disply Port output. If not, then the technology needed is MHL https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-Definition_Link which might be listed in the spec. If nothing is stated, chances are you're not going to be able to drive a monitor from your phone's USB port with just a cable.
The wireless solutions are a whole nother can of worms and seem to be very device dependent.

And a separate question, what's the deal with Android phones and connecting them to TVs using USB C to HDMI cables?
I know my current phone doesn't do it but is it a feature of top end ones? Anything that I should look for in terms of specs to see if a phone definitively does/doesn't do this? Googling just seems to bring up loads of conflicting info.
