  • Broady is going for Edinburgh - London this Thursday

  • @wheels_of_fire on the road for his attempt at Edinburgh London record (and maybe the 24hr record)

    Live trackers:

  • Follow on twitter here: https://twitter.com/endtoend2018

  • Useful to follow xcweather.com to see the wind course . Good planning.

  • xcweather.com

Pretty sure you mean xcweather.co.uk ...

  • I do indeed
    https://xcweather.co.uk/

    Windguru as well.

  • Down a little on time to the scheduled 11.30 pm finish but he was in edinburgh at 6 am this morning !

  • It looks really tight. He's down on schedule but close to what the holder would have done.

I'm hoping to see him at the end. I'm the saddo in the pub a couple of miles away from the finish, after everyone else I was with has gone home.

I’ve only just stopped driving after horrendous traffic and I still have no idea how this has happened but (subject to @RRA_GB ratification, which is not a formality)…. we have a new record!

Indeed. A welcome party of various long distance type folk were there. Some even ride three wheels!
    "

(So I guess that's JS, Frank and maybe even Hippy. Three wheels could be one of SA, JS, MB, AM or another JS, or maybe DM or maybe someone completely different - TO, SP, ?!)

    Chapeau.

  • Well done, @wheels_of_fire (subject to ratification)!

  • Amazing!

  • A lot of work for 5 minutes ! Phew

  • Strong ride @wheels_of_fire and well done on beating the record (subject to ratification of course).

  • Finished with plenty of time to spare 😬

    Congrats!

  • Outstanding

  • So he rolled in at 11:42 with 6 minutes to spare.

The A10 was closed so no following car, but he did have a guy riding with / behind him, as a spare bike if needed. That meant no timekeepers. When they got there they asked those of us who were there if we could confirm the time and took email addresses so they can be in touch.

@hippy got a photo of him crossing the line so he will have the exact time from that.

The trike reference was Ralph Dadswell, who holds the trike record. Half of the tandem record crew from last year was also there (but I think he just missed the arrivee).

When I got there, after my pub had closed, Judith and Dave M were already there. Greg Melia came on a Brompton, Ralph, then hippy rocked up in short sleeves about 5 minutes before he crossed.

It was pretty tense while we were waiting, following the tracker. He looked like he just about had it, but things can go wrong. 6 minutes is like 2 miles out of nearly 400, so hardly anything.

When he finished he came over and chatted (first thing he said was to thank us for coming out), then after a minute his legs went and he had a sit down on the pavement - all the glamour of record breaking!

  • @hippy got a photo of him crossing the line so he will have the exact time from that.

Have you seen @hippy 's photo? Looks like he was a fair few beers in by that point.

  • He seemed fine to me. But I had been in the pub all evening!

He was on the ball to take it. It may well be the evidence that validates the record!

They came round really quick - and I hadn't expected there to be two riders - so, after having stood around waiting for 45 minutes, I was a bit taken by surprise when he actually finished, so didn't get a photo. Just realised that my Cycliq was running, so there might be something on that. Most likely the bars will have flopped over and it will just be the lower halves of a bunch people standing on the pavement so not rushed to check it yet.

  • I'm yanking his chain. I'll buy him a pint if that photo is the evidence used to validate the record.

  • Actually, thinking about it, it was a bit odd to stand around at midnight last night in just a T-shirt. He said it was the alcohol keeping it warm. Maybe he had burned it in his trangia instead of drinking it.

  • There may have been drink involved (hiccup) but I had no idea how close he was so he took me by surprise and my phone isn't great for pics of anything in the dark.

  • He seemed fine to me.

    Functional alcoholic innit.

I also got a video of him that shows him at the postbox. That will also be timestamped.

  • I did have a jumper. But we'd gone from the pub to a restaurant so I'd 'fast walked' from a large meal (like, with dessert and dessert wine and stuff) to the finish so I was toasty (and pished).

I told the clipboard bloke I'm an RRA member - I don't know if that will add any more gravity to my shitty phone recordings but at least he's knows we weren't all total randoms hanging out at a statue.

Jeez, I'm watching a video I took earlier that night of my mate falling off one of those one-wheeled motorised things. I sound very drunk. :S
