Could you be clever and have the top half for hanging stuff then and open shelf and low half (or 1/3) for drawers? That would totally work if your walls can take the floating top part.

yes - current thinking is to just copy the first image I posted:
top will be a wardrobe with hanging (it would have to be a front-to-back telescopic rail due to depth issues) + open shelving at the bottom
bottom of alcove will be a two drawer bedside table.
there's some issues to work around though (principally to do with space): (i) depth of alcove is a constraint; and, (ii) width of bed is a constraint (i.e. it is slightly wider than the chimney breast) and so any cabinetry has to be designed to not foul the bed

The cubby hole thing is definitely an option. Saw it in a caravan recently actually. Here's an example (of function rather than form)

Yep, deeply annoying. Roll over in the night, headbutt a wardrobe. Sounds like fun.

Wall mounted bedside lamps. Hit me up. No particular style in mind, just looking for some inspiration

Got ya.
Not sure how you define tight budget but that example could have been north of 100k, or was it in the sun 6 figure category?
A bit of a mixed bag but some other examples here https://pin.it/2JAURht -

Guess she invented that style.
But I also like the Ikea Roller ones from the 80s, and the ones that go under G&G for Massive Holland, they seem to come in different sizes.Edit because more coffee, less stupid links.

With this I would bring the bed out ~6 inches and have some kind of shallow storage groove/cubby the width of the bed behind the headboard. Somewhere to shove your book/hidden sockets to charge phone, etc.

With wires in the wall or without?

SDS have a biggish showroom in Battersea. We got our stuff from there (fitter had a trade discount) and I needed to go in to swap something. Loads of stuff on display and very helpful. Will pull stuff out from the store room etc.

Funnily enough I was going to suggest these, preferred the Hay ones but taking price into consideration we got ikea Skurup and Nymane. Nymane is actually quite well designed and good quality
The new Magri Williams project in North London is seriously getting me horny
