  • simple clean shouldn't require you to burn the brakes in again

It’s good practice to bed in again even after a light clean with disc brake cleaner.
I tend to find no power and bite after I’ve rubbed the rotors down.

  • Hmm, I've never found that post clean bed in to be more than pulling the lever once or twice at the beginning of a ride, as compared to the rolling down a hill with the brakes on process of bedding in brand new brakes

Perhaps my quick wipe with IPA isn't cleaning things as thoroughly. This thread makes me want to go back to using v-brakes

  • Yeah maybe not quite full bed in process I suppose. For me it tends to take a bit before it’s back to full really-grabby-over-the-bars braking that I like!

  • This thread makes me want to go back to using BB5s.

    FTFY.

  • Yeah maybe not quite full bed in process I suppose. For me it tends to take a bit before it’s back to full really-grabby-over-the-bars braking that I like!

My rear won't lock the wheel at the moment.

  • Ace you had a chance to do some proper riding on the secus/dhx yet?

  • Might also be due to it not being properly aligned, but yeah a bit of heat in the pads and rotor might get it back to feeling better

How long before you try Shiguras?

  • My rear won't lock the wheel at the moment.

Yeah this is usually my experience after using muc off brake cleaner

  • Do you reuse the fluid, or are you going through pints of the stuff?

  • There isn’t a huge amount in the system, but also I had no issues since my first Scottish holiday so haven’t touched the brakes until I had to strip the frame to send it off for the ISCG tab.

  • Ace you had a chance to do some proper riding on the secus/dhx yet?

Hopefully this weekend, now that I've got the bike back.

  • I recently installed my first set of hydraulic brakes. Surprised myself with how little fluid it took, and felt a bit stupid for buying two bottles of the stuff.

  • On a different note, riddle me this hive-mind. I'm getting a bump from the rear wheel once per revolution (I think, hard to tell). What's the most likely cause - tyre?

  • That’s a tyres, put it in the stand and spin it.

  • Solid blob of sealant stuck to insert.

  • Yeah I am not impressed with the muc-off stuff. I feel it must be leaving some residue when it does that. (On Hope/Sram and Shimano systems)

  • It’s interesting you say that. As I don’t remember it happening to the same extent in years gone by. But I feel like I’ve pretty much always used muc off.

Is there a cheaper disc brake cleaner that’s any good?
You would think stuff marketed for motorbikes/cars would be cheaper than mtb but muc off markets themselves to motorbikes too.
Motorex brake cleaner is about the same price as muc off 🤷‍♀️

I might give this a try

  • Automotive disc cleaners definitely leave a residue

    I'd stick with isopropyl

  • Ah now you say that, I now remember being told bicycle brakes don’t generate enough heat to burn off the residue!

I’ll give Motorex a try, if only because I seen it being used in the WC pits

  • WC racers probably generate a lot more heat in their brakes than anyone on here ;-)

  • Pfft you’ve not seen me drag my rear brake down inners!

  • I've never had a problem with the Fenwicks stuff. Will be going back to it!

  • Isopropyl does the job, and costs fuck all per litre

  • Lunch time - lets see if I can burn the discs in/cleaning agent off.
