  • A positive review here, doesn't go into much detail but explains why it looks like Shutter Precision
    https://myfavoritebikeparts.wordpress.com/2020/03/31/kasai-dynacoil-rb-dynamo-hub-long-term-review/

  • I have a spare Sinewave revolution usb plug in if anyone fancies one, spare for my road bike I have split up and sold

  • What would be the cheapest 12x100 20 inch thru axle dynamo option for omnium cargo? So far been eyeing Shimano DH-UR705-3D. Anyone has experience with 20 inch thru axle dynamos? Is there anything to worry about?

  • 12x100? Omnium wifi is 15x100 isn’t it?

Built lots of 20” dynamos, have used the standard offerings from shimano or SP and had no issues

  • Been wondering about getting one of these, what sort of price were you thinking?

  • Rrp is £120, happy to sell for £70 posted

  • Wanted one of those but gave up waiting for euro stock to arrive (a year late, and not to do with covid, from before that!). Got a SP instead, works fine, only powers a b+m cyo+, but makes 3w light others so would go upto a b+m top 200lm light no problem.
A lot of folk worry about the speed of a 20" dyno hub being a problem. Think that was more for older ones that are unregulated

  • Bit of a dredge, but did you ever get a hub? The Kasai doesn't come in boost so wondering what you did (as you said you were looking at boost originally).

  • same question/request! :D

  • I am due to give my wheelbuilder my decision this week ref which hub to go for. Still torn between the Spa cycles own brand one and the Son 28, both in boost. Quite a difference in price and unfortunately not much info/test analysis of the Spa one.
I will be using it for night MTB'ing locally (South coast area) and also for bike packing/touring abroad. I'm pretty sure the Son 28 will have the lower drag factor but not sure how much of an issue this will be off road. Decisions, decisions....

  • I could be wrong, but I think the SPA own-brand boost hub is a version of an SP. That's what the body shape looks like anyway, and I rememeber reading that Kasai weren't making a boost version, so it'll be non-servicable.

  • If you can afford son just do it.

  • SPA CYCLES IC-KC1F Hub Dynamo (15x110mm Thru Axle, Centre-lock Disc)
    OUR PRICE £126.00
Spa Cycles launch our range of highly-efficient (70%) IC-hub dynamos. Their key feature is their innovative end-cap design. By switching end-caps the dynamo wheel can be interchanged between bikes with quick-release, 12mm thru-axle and 15mm thru-axle formats. Hubs are available in standard 100mm and boost 110mm widths.

I do like that idea of flexibility in being able to change the wheel between different bikes!

Any idea if you can do that with Son too? If so, I will probably bite the bullet and order the Son.

  • Surely there's no such thing as a 110 Boost QR fork?

  • So, the spa cycles own dyno hub does seem to be unique in what looks like being very easy to change between bikes with a different axle setup by just changing the end caps, as per this kit for £12
    End-caps to convert your Spa Cycles Hub Dynamo from 15mm thru-axle to 12mm thru-axle or M9 quick-release:

Having spoken to SJSC, they say there is a similar thing for the Son hubs as shown below. This looks a bit more involved/complicated and expensive than the Spa option. The guy at SJSC said that not many people are aware of this kit. He said the main disadvantage of going down this route, is if you were touring, took the wheel out and lost one of those small spacers!....then you would be stuffed :-(

I'm not ever so practical but that Spa kit looks like it would make the transfer over to another bike/axle very quick and simple.

Your comments would be appreciated :-)

  • One further comment:
Spa cycles say their design is unique for not just being serviceable but also for the end cap design and it's the first time I have come across any dyno hub that looks like it is easy to transfer/adapt for different axles.

  • Yeah son won't do that. You'd need an internal machined adaptor

  • The Genesis Logitude had one one year, and maybe the Sonder somethingorrather

  • Yeah that tells me that the end caps can be changed for different wheels, nothing about field serviceable bearings. It's a neat idea for sure but it looks a bit like they've got some non-branded SP and Kasai hubs and had the end caps machined somewhere. The Kasai-looking models appear to be non-boost only. I might ping them an email myself on the subject actually.

  • Silly_Savage.....have a look at their website as it clearly says they are field serviceable and that is one of their unique selling points. You will also see very clearly that they sell them in boost sizes! I wouldn't be interested if they didn't. I personally wouldn't have a clue about how to service them but I'm sure most wheel builders would.

  • One model that's field servicable and boost though? I'm not seeing it. The bloke at Spa just confirmed the same.

  • He did say they'd both got better bearings than the original models though, so they would hopefully last longer than a SP.

  • Spa cycles say their design is unique

It's the same hub that was in those Arkose dynamo wheels that Evans sold for a hundred quid (full wheel) that myself and a load of others on here snagged.
Came with all the end caps etc
    It's decent

  • Ah okay, I see what you mean. They do boost but not the field serviceable ones in boost. Sorry for the confusion.
I still like the idea of that interchangeability with other axles though.

Would it work to buy one of the field serviceable 115 thru axle ones like the first one highlighted above
and then use their £12 kit to convert it to boost and vice versa?

    Highgrade 7075 Al end caps
Suitable for use with Spa Cycles Hub Dynamo models:
    IC-KC5F
    IC-KD5F
    IC-KC1F
    IC-KD1F
    FS-FK5C
    FS-FK5D
The last 2 models listed as being compatible incl. 2 field serviceable hubs which includes a 115 thru axle which makes me think you could.

  • I can't see why not, although you obviously lose out on the extra strength of the boost hub. You'd need to space out the disc rotor too.
