people will forget by GE
They'll forget n a couple of weeks I fear. A couple more Williamson gaffs in the media to distract everyone and it'll be back to normal.

The Tories are the Party of Stealth* tax rises:
Thatcher/Howe: VAT from 8 to 15%, (subsidises Income Tax reductions for Higher Earners)
Thatcher/Heseltine**: 'temporary' VAT increase from 15 to 17.5%, to resolve PollTax/Community Charge, (subsidises owners of larger properties),
Cameron/Osbourne; VAT 17.5 to 20% 'we're all in this together', to 'solve Austerty', ( to save the UK economy from reckless bank lending),
Johnson: NI up 1.25% to subsidise owners of larger properties(* 'Stealth' as in 'headline news',
**actually implemented by Major/Lamont after Thatcher was eviscerated). -

Im pro this tax rise, not smart enough to know if it should be income tax or NI.
I detest regressive test that push the burden on everyone but also top line income tax that decreases total tax revenue and therefore everything.
What's the centre line alternative?
My current position is Starmer wins the next GE, even before the tax stuff.

This current tax rise barely goes towards social care until that point

People on the left would say that the top rate of tax and corporation tax or tax on property should be reformed to ensure that billionaires who've profited massively from Covid but pay fuck all should actually contribute.
Centrists would presumably fret about annoying billionaires in case there's a party on a yacht and they're not invited.

yacht ? you mean an island surely

SO..................electoral college. I quit the party about two months ago, so no horse in this race any more, but still........this is what he's spending his time doing?

I have more than one racket happening

I thought "Labour are talking about moving away from first past the post for general elections, that's a pretty big deal" and then I googled it and realised it was something that 95% of voters won't care about.

Labour as in the leadership? Link plz. That is a big deal. Couldn't find anything obvious with a google.

• #2091
I'm aware of that, but aggi seems to be talking about electoral reform for general elections, not party leadership. I understand PR is being pushed for as something to discuss during the conference, but I've not been able to find anything from the leadership on it.
-
• #2092
Oh, I think I misunderstood. He thought that's what they were talking about, but instead it was something not related at all. I'm dumb.
-
• #2093
Yep, I thought it was something exciting and relevant. Turns out it wasn't.

One of them. I know many people don't really take it seriously, but the 2019 GE result and the EHRC report - where Labour were found legally responsible for unlawful discrimination against Jews - were both potentially existential moments for the Labour Party. It's quite understandable that the party would take steps to prevent something like that from happening again.
I am inclined to agree with aggi that no-one outside the party gives a fuck. I don't think anyone outside the party cares about party democracy. But I do think it's a crucial first step in becoming electable again. The members have an outsize voice and they've gotten used to being thrown red meat over the last five or six years. But Labour only gets into power where the various voices within it are balanced. This strikes me as being a good way back to balance.

• #2095
Yeah, two things. I don't see Starmer pushing electoral reform for general elections, personally.
Lets see how it pans out, I suppose.

don't forget: ensuring LABHQ abuse party processes (especially the disciplinary process, repeatedly ignoring the recommendations of the EHRC report); waging an internal war along factional lines (including against young labour); repeatedly ignoring transphobia from his back bench; presiding over a precipitous drop in the membership; firing and rehiring workers at LABHQ; and, basically consolidating the power for the labour right to rule over the salted earth. among many other (very bad) things. hell mend him.
-
• #2097
Ha, and I managed to go through the exact same process when I read your post! Oh well...
-
• #2098
ensuring LABHQ abuse party processes (especially the disciplinary process, repeatedly ignoring the recommendations of the EHRC report)
I mean EHRC have to approve our new complaints process - that's part of the action plan - so if they think Labour are likely to abuse the disciplinary process they'll be able to say so. But since its going to be 100% independent of the Labour Party, I think you'll have trouble sustaining that position.

firing and rehiring workers at LABHQ;
That's not what's happening though is it? Isn't contractors with one skill set getting let go, new contractors getting hired with different skill set?
