No logic to it at all, other than showing off, as you say. Pilot was acting out his F-16 fantasy, I guess. The readings on the strain gauges at the next service might need some explaining.

Do you think the MD80 has anything as advanced as strain gauges?! I like the joke in the comments on that video about them being fly by wire - some of the wires were 1/16", others were 1/2".

Not sure what the logic is in the slow inital climb other than showing off - can't help thinking if you took of like that at a lot of airlines you'd end up having to explain yourself to the management.
