Trouble is that it’s barely detectable whilst riding so can go on for a long time before it’s noticed. By then the axle is stepped (Fu**ed) and it’s that clunking that grabs your attention.

Ooh, Tester explained this recently. Iirc the softer material picks up fine particles and gradually abrades the harder one, bit like sandpaper ;).. or something like that
