  • This is what happens when the weather get the better of the bearings and they seize up. By some weird quirk of physics the nylon bearing cup wears away the steel axle. Trouble is that it’s barely detectable whilst riding so can go on for a long time before it’s noticed. By then the axle is stepped (Fu**ed) and it’s that clunking that grabs your attention.

    Ooh, Tester explained this recently. Iirc the softer material picks up fine particles and gradually abrades the harder one, bit like sandpaper ;).. or something like that

  • Thanks for this. I’ve just bought these cranks second hand, so I’m wondering if this is cosmetic or something warranting a return.

    Will this cause premature wear to new bearings and clunk when rotating?
