So after over a quarter of a century of using Atacs pretty much exclusively, I think I've finally given up on them.
I absolutely love Atacs, but the quality of them has gone so downhill over the years that I can't justify the cost of constantly replacing them anymore.
The most recent version I bought was a set of speciale 8's...which aren't exactly cheap. After less than a year of being on my work bike they both have bad axle play that can't be adjusted out, and one of the retention bars has snapped on the left side, with all the bars showing really bad wear. A problem which definitely got worse once they switched to the square bars on the higher models.
The cleats have always been soft as shit so needed replacing regularly. But I could live with that before when the pedals themselves were better.
I've now decided it's time to stop spending my money on them. 😕
I'm not a huge fan of SPD's. Something about them I just don't get on with.
So I just picked up a set of the Hope Union trail pedals to see if the new kids on the block will bring back the love I used to have for Atacs.
First impressions are that the quality of machining is typical exceptional Hope standard.
Hope bearings are good quality, so I have high hopes there. The cleats and all mechanisms are stainless steel, so hopefully I won't be buying new cleats every couple of months now.
The feel is very similar to Atacs which is a big win for me.
I'll see whether I need to tighten the retention springs once I give them a proper go at work tomorrow...but fingers crossed they will be a worthy successor to my beloved Atacs!
