If it's people / portraits for the most part then the "next best" is a tough choice, as all others are definitely a step down when it comes to natural, nuanced skin tones.
This doesn't mean you can't shoot nice portraits with cheaper film - but likely you will need to try and error what works for you.
Check out the portrait pictures in flickr pools of films like Kodak Gold 200 or Fuji C200 (or whatever film is available at a good price where you are) to get some impressions..
I've always shot portra, 400/160, but obviously the prices seem to be going up and up silly amounts every time I buy rolls... What are recommendations for the next best comparable 35mm colour? Mostly outdoor, holiday snaps etc, usually people/portraits.
