  • I support this quiet hub movement

  • Campagnolo/fulcrum and shimano factory wheels have got your back in that respect. I appreciate they’re not really antiquated enough for a Riv, but man they’re quiet.

  • What if we made this a game show

  • T610 continues to be the best hub

  • Sheldon Brown's quickbeam

  • I agree.
I put Hope hubs on my touring bike, it was a bad idea, they’re annoying.

  • Man. Stainless freehub body with 4 pawls? I did that. It was horrendous.

  • Makes you keep pedalling more, no?

  • Nobody in this thread is pedalling more than the absolute bare minimum to keep the bike balanced

  • Re: Thorn bikes with mechs… I would argue that Riv have got it right about derailleurs, and Thorn have got most of the other stuff pretty balanced between Grouch and modern stuff. Fuck lugs. Fuck quills. Think they’ve pretty much transitioned to bolt thru now too. this is totally not true

I’ve got a thorn with a mechs, just flogged one that was pretty bloody awesome too. Love em, and they sell for peanuts.

  • also owners set apart the two brands - this person wrote a love letter to their Quickbeam and published it on their blog:

My dear friend and companion Rivendell Quickbeam,

Thank you for riding through life with me.

Every time I make the first pedal stroke down my drive I sense our solid connection. My back, arms, and legs feel totally in sync with you.

You respond to my every need, zipping forward as I apply pressure, gently slowing as I apply the brakes to your rims. (I know you deserve better brakes; I promise to work on that next year.)

I revel in the way we manage traffic and commute together. You (and the Tubus) do such a fine job of hauling all my work clothing and necessities. I can even carry a pannier and ride no-handed. That’s awesome! I know sometimes I carry too much stuff and that bothers you, but you never get too cranky with me.

Your tires are the perfect width. We sail down Washington, D.C., roads without fear of cracks and small debris. On days when I feel like a getaway down the C&O Canal, you offer a smooth ride despite the hardpack and bumps.

I love that you have one gear; we have an uncomplicated life together.

Thank you, Quickbeam, for being so amazing. I know I never gave you another name, but Quickbeam fit you so well. I sometimes forget to share my feelings, but know that I always appreciate your steadiness, beauty, and simplicity.

We were made to ride together, and I am grateful I found you

  • And just like that I no longer want a Rivendell

  • Americans are weird but I dont mind it. It read quite genuine.

  • Just a hop, skip and a jump from 'Man marries car'

  • Need that “I have better taste than you” sticker.

  • This is a friends Riv. He’s pretty tall.
