  • I suppose you’re right, if the front mech is there I shouldn’t need a clutch? What a relief

    Does advent come in 3x?

  • You'd out-amey Amey's Sora (not saying you're doing a bit mind)

MicroShift ADVENT SL-M8195-R Right Trigger Shifter
MicroShift ADVENT SL-M819-L Left Trigger Shifter
MicroShift FD-T492 Advent Double Front Derailleur - 9 Speed
MicroShift ADVENT RD-M619 Rear Derailleur - 9 Speed or
MicroShift ADVENT RD-M6195 Clutch Rear Derailleur - 9 Speed Long Cage
    MicroShift ADVENT CS-H093 9sp Cassette 11-42

  • microshift in theory looks fine but I suspect it'd be flimsy

i'd go for used deore/XT 9 speed stuff

  • Feel like I need more speeds in my brain rn

The micro shift is front mech is definitely 2x exclusive ve judging by the bikes tee page? Assume I could just use a different brand one, Mix and match

Would be nice to get something which was used tho, parts bin special type deal

“It works fine but I just upgraded to stave off the ever king wrong dread of life through symptom management which manifests as bike tinkering, so you could have this old 3x drive train for ______?

Really i should be paying you, if anyone sees this on your bike you’re just going to get harassed”

  • if you buy microshift, I will not allow you to draw parallels with environment and bicycle consumption even ironically.

    Used shimano 👌

  • I likely won’t be buying it for the same reason I didn’t for my homer, UK stockists are non existent

I think I’m going to go for alvio

  • Why not run the cranks as 2x by using the middle and inner positions? That way you get a <34 little ring whilst keeping the 2x simplicity.

  • So simple, so obvious!

Will give the look I’m after too 😎

    Good shout!

  • I think it looks really good with the right chainrings, but my googling isn't up to scratch today. Only issue/totally not a problem is that you might need a triple FD if the size difference between rings is too big?

  • I am with @amey. Go for some old Deore / XT stuff.
Up until 9speed, almost everything Shimano is cross-compatible. You can even run most 9speed MTB derailleurs with 10speed road shifters.
Take your fancy new cranks, use the inner two positions and 46/30 or similar chainrings plus an older mtb derailleur that can handle up to 34t and you got yourself a really nice range of gears. That's what I am running on my Raleigh.

  • Thank you @oddo, does seem like the “Americana” drivetrain idea will be binned,I have also been reminded of the handsome price of deore t610s on spa cycle and how they’d be quite nice built up with some of the rims arkane built onto my pomp hubs.

Looks like we’re back to japan.

I have been made aware by @yoshy I am misinformed, the cranks are actually 110, using his csi esque photo enhancement techniques to see the inside ring in the double position is a 34, he suspects they’re actually 110bcd (there is no markings on the rings or cranks, only legnth and teeth)

The info I got for them online specifically says “double cranks” and yoshy has politely pointed out these are triple

Meaning one should be able to use a regular double set up with them? Makes things easier if so.

  • Chuck a triple in and use the limit screw to stop it from going in the empty chainring like we boomers used to do with classic MTBs

  • Nice cranks

  • cranks are good, can't wait for process pics of the new mv frame

  • i'd go for used deore/XT 9 speed stuff

This is what I've got sitting waiting to be used.

10spd dura ace bar end shifter or 10spd 105 brifters and long cage 9 seed XT mech that will cover a 40t cassette. lovely and simple!

  • I mean……. Could just take the gears off the homer???

Put them on this new frame? Run 42/34 1x on 35s? More than easy gears?

Make homer single speed big bmx with Thomson 6 bolt and stooge bars?

Litterally only have to buy wheels for the new bike?

    Save money? Have hesh bikes?

Whomest can be arsed to work out what stuff to buy, solves all my issues

Damn I love buying bikes which are all the same standards

This bike thing is so easy after spending 10000 hours online losing your fucking mind

  • Make homer single speed

    yes

  • Homer single speed makes sense. less time thinking about gears more time thinking what to mount on homer fork

  • This bike thing is so easy after spending 10000 hours online losing your fucking mind

Seems easy until you fall into another rabbit hole which makes you question everything you think you know.
+1 on the ss Homer btw

  • It's a brilliant bit of politics. Put forward an overly complex, obviously unworkable solution to a self made problem, spend a while getting the public riled up, arguing amongst themselves, then step forward and cut the Gordian knot as though you couldn't have just bought an altus drive train and trigger shifters for the new bike if you hadn't been seduced by some tasteful ano chainrings.

How much to subscribe to your blog.

  • Seems like it’s made up with the gear transplant

Early in the project is the time for naval gazing so I’ve been doing some, looking at my mood board its filled with bling and nice American bikes built for tech bros and and venture capitalists, and I have built or tried to build a couple similar now but they’re not sparking joy outside of a sheer sense of meme ability or absurdity.

It was nice in lockdown, you didn’t go anywhere or do anything, it was fun to have the sheer pinnacle of bike to ride when you did.

But now I find myself locking up, carrying shopping or not really riding anywhere inspirational, it’s really hit home how much more I like the “idea of these bikes” the photos of them, watching people build them, than I do owning or using them

I think it’s what makes a riv attraction so strong, really lovely frames, not cheap but a fair price, but parts which are cheap to replace and ones which don’t stick out, do not hold back the riding experience. And I think that’s what I’m liking about my pomp right now, it’s a lovely bike which looks excellent, rides even better, but in words of a friend .

“Yeah it looks the part but when you really get into it you’re just bummed about the levers if anything happened”

Now to buy a riv in the uk is either luck or a large import fee, same with a crust, but we do have a bunch of nice frames on eBay if you do enough browsing and several lovely builders who will build you a frame at a modest price

So I think that’s what I’m going to do with the new bike, and what I’ve slowly done with the homer since arriving, both out of mechanical incomparable and personal desire

It’s been fun to see the “Brexit bike ethos” change and develop over the multitude of bikes I’d say it’s now:

    • Picking a frame with the right clearance
    • Using Parts you can afford to jump off a kerb
    • Putting time into finding nice touches for cheap
    • Being present and not tripping on nostalgia
    • Appreciating that modern bits will eventually be nostalgic bits
    • Accepting it’s ultimately, not parts which make a bike desirable; it’s not the bike which makes the vibe

  • Sounds a little like my Pelago Stavanger.
I've dreamt of Paul Klampers, Son dynamo lighting and all that Jan Heine's dreams are made of, but right now its running 3x9 with a no-name shimano crankset and deore rear derailer BB7 disks and sks bluemels mudguards that I've had to cut into to fit.
And it's never ridden better imo.

  • Coaster hub on the Homer is the way
